Replacing glass in hutch?

I just found a corner hutch for my dining room on Craigslist for $20.00. I am going to do a little TLC on it by sanding and painting it simple black. But...my big issue is this piece came from England and has wood lattice/diamond shaped pattern pieces that are over the wood. It's a flat piece of glass so I am not looking at a curved piece or anything. My DH and I both looked and the wood lattice is integrated into the frame so I really don't think there is any way to actually remove the lattice from both sides of the glass.

My question is...does anyone have any idea how expensive it is to replace a 2x3 ft (ish) piece of glass? I am thinking it may end up being more than what I bargained for considering I'm sure we're going to have to router a groove around the frame on the inside so the glass has something to hold into.

I'm just wondering if it will be cheaper to just remove the glass all together and leave it open and airy or if it really isn't all that expensive.

Wow, I am jealous! That sounds really nice!

Why do you want to replace the glass? Is it cracked?

Is there a way you could remove the door and bring the door to a glass shop to have the glass replaced?

Find a glass shop in your area that you can send (or take) a picture of the hutch to. They will give you advice on what to do with it & an estimate of how expensive it will be to replace/fix it.

I am so excited about this! I've been looking forever on craigslist for a corner unit for my dining room (for a really cheap price) that I could basically refinish myself.

Anyway, I don't really like the style that the wood/lattice gives off. The piece has really great "bones" as far as the cut of the wood and style goes (and how it's made) but cosmetically it almost has a "chalet" or "victorian" look to it if that makes any sense.:rotfl2: I am just looking for clean straight glass to display my grandmothers china and tea set.

I don't know about your area but I have had similar pieces of glass replaced and it was not very expensive may 15 to 20 dollars! I would buy it for that price!

If the glass will sit against the latice on one side, then you only need to hold it on from the back, correct? How about those clear plastic holders that screw in that are made to hold large frameless mirrors on a wall. If you put them inside the piece, they would not show. I think you could get the glass cut very cheaply.

What about a place like Michael's that does framing? Could they cut the glass for what you need? What a great bargain!

We needed to have glass for our cabinets over the bar, we just went to a glass shop and had it cut to size. It was extremely easy and cheap to do. We needed 4 pieces total, 2 in 1 size and 2 in another, took them about 30 minutes to cut it and we walked out with it in hand. They were easy to find too, just looked in the yellow pages.

This is an EXCELLENT idea! We want to remove the entire latice on both sides, so if we cut the glass just a smidge larger than the opening these plastic holders might work!

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone! Hopefully I will remember to take pics along the way and post them once it's complete!

FYI - I had to replace a piece of glass in my hutch last year. The glass is 3ft by 10.5 inches. Cost was about $35. Just went to the glass place that does our windshields, gave them the dimensions and they cut it. They do mirrors and other glass stuff also.
