Replacement windows...Pella?

The joys of home ownership. Need to replace windows...looked at Pella at Lowes. Like them OK. But someone who "has a friend" who has Pella windows says they let in too much heat...in the summer they are hot to the touch. Cannot afford Anderson windows. So does anyone have any experience? Thanks.

pella are nt the best insulated,, see if you can get amarvin dealer to get you a quote,, they are pretty good windows, anderson arent that great as a replacement anyway, haveto be in thier sizes,, no cusdtoms and as you probably know an older home wont fit new sizes. marvins also has aretrofit replacement that is fairly easy to install and will fit into existing jambs. check around, am sure you can get a maqrvin dealer, or a better deal than pella

Generally Pella is considerd superior to Anderson and they typically cost more. There are multiple grades of Pella, as well as more than one grade of Anderson. The ones sold in Home Depot and Lowes don't typically come with the tinted glass that reflect the heat and UV rays away, so that may be the problem. We have had a few Andersons and have no complaints, but have Pellas in the new house we are building.

We just had several Atrium custom replacement windows installed and we love them. We did 7 double-hungs, a bay with casements that open and a garden window. They are beautiful and we can really tell the difference. DD's room faces south and gets 10-12 hours of sun during the summer. Used to be 15-20 degrees warmer in her room even with the A/C. Now there is a neglible difference, amazing. The U rating on the windows is .24, one of the best in the industry.

We were going to get Pella and our contractor recommended CertainTeed.

He chose CertainTeed for his home. That said a lot to us. We compared the information and for the money it had the same features and a lifetime warranty.

I can't comment on either brand but I can tell you that the thickness of the windows helps as does low-E glass coating and argon gas fill. Since most brands have several grades of window, I'd compare grade to grade.

I had Pella replacement windows installed in my old townhouse by Pella, not Lowes.

My upstairs bedroom was west facing. Even in the winter, it got hot up there. There was a definate BIG difference with the Pellas in the summertime. The thing I liked was that they tore out the frame and stuffed new insulation in the walls before installing the windows.

The Pellas are bare wood. You will have to stain or paint the frames, sills, etc. I stained, and boy did it make a difference when I tried to sell. People LOVED it.

Now I'm spoiled, I need new windows in my new house, but I can only afford replacement window, and I want the full tear-out!

Certainteed is an excellent brand for replacement windows. Renewal windows by Anderson can be custom made. Pella is also good. The best windows they make are not availale at places like Lowes though, but through their dealers.

Lowe's sells wood Pella replacement windows that are the same as sold by Pella Corp. Lowe's also has an exclusive arrangement with Pella to sell a vinyl replacement window.

They are 2 totally different animals.

Vinyl = Lower quality.

Wood = High Quality Pella Window.
