Pardon my ignorance on the topic but I was reading a thread where DVC owners are renting their points out to (I am assuming) non-owners.
I am wondering who this is benefiting and basically why is seems to be so common.
We are starting to plan our first WDW trip and I'm wondering if this is a route we should explore.
I know how helpful DIS'ers are and greatly appreciate anyone who can take the time to shine so light on this for me.
TIA-Heather

Many rentals are to other members but I'm sure most are to non members. It actually benefits both parties. The rentee gets a DVC room at a significantly cheaper rate than they could with Disney directly and comparing a studio to a hotel room or a 2 BR to 2 hotel rooms, generally cheaper than you could get a deluxe hotel room. The member gets dollars for the points they weren't planning to use. Win Win if you ignore risk but you can't. Both parties have some risk but there are ways to minimize the risk.

you might want to start by reading this (older but still useful) thread:

Considering Renting from a DVC Member? thread

or it may be more simple to rent through a broker like david (who includes a number of helpful FAQs on his site):

IMO, though, i would rent directly through disney for a first trip. renting is a little more complicated and there's enough to keep you occupied with planning a wdw trip without the unusual DVC stuff...

I think the first question you shuld ask it to yourself. "What type of accomodations do I want/need". If you ware looking to stay on property and are looking for a hotel that is moderate or deluxe (or you have more than 4 in your party), it may be cost beneficial to you. As charles posted above, read the threads so you understand what you get / don't get. I know some renters are simply trying to get some money for points they will otherwise loss, they should be willing to assist you in certain aspects such as where to get tickets, assist in purchasing dining plan if interested (safest way is for you to buy just enough in Disney Gift Cards and let the member us them to pay) and setting up Magic Express. If a renter is unwilling to help you with those items, I would find a diffferent renter.

Disney allows us to rent out unused points to "cover" the fees. If you go over to the rent/trade board you should be able to get good info, read the sticky's. Many renters there are seasoned and should be good to work with.

I'd take issue with your wording, maybe it's unintentional, maybe not. As worded it implies that one can only rent leftover points and that there is a limit on what can be charged. An attitude we've seen on DIS before is that you can't "make money' when you rent. All of those are incorrect. Renting is expressly allowed in the POS but "commercial renting" is prohibited. Disney's current line on commercial is 20 reservations per year before they start to look at the question. In this context, simply making a profit on what you do rent does not constituted commercial renting nor does renting a few weeks a year for whatever reason.
