I'm not sure what you are asking, the owner has control over the reservation at all times. All changes/cancelations must go through them. The owner is the only one who can cancel a reservation.

I think the OP might be concerned that the owner could cancel the reservation after the OP has paid for it.

The answer is yes. Even though your name is on the reservation, the owner retains complete control of the reservation at all times, and can cancel the reservation.

This is the tradeoff with renting DVC points. You save a great deal of money, but give up control of the reservation, and that feeling of security.

That being said, though, in many years of reading these boards, I have seen very, very few reports of DVC rentals gone 'bad' because of an unscrupulous owner. The vast majority of owners who rent ponts on the DISboards are quite honest, and are renting points to recoup the costs of points they can't use.

The question I was trying to ask is if when I pay the owner for the points what is to keep them from cancelling my reservation, keeping my money and I would have nothing to show for it. I know when renting points there has to be trust on both sides. I would like to be sure I still had a reservation when I arrive at WDW. If the owner has sole control over my reservation I have no way to protect myself from the owner cancelling my reservation and also keeping my money. Do I?

Renting DVC points requires trust by the renter that the DVC member will not cancel your reservation or that your reservation will be made at all. Member Services does not deal with renters, but only DVC members.

My concern is that since renting DVC points seems to be fairly common knowledge (Mousesavers, Passporter, other budget guides mention it as well), there will always be people who try to scam others. These boards have typically resulted in good transactions from what I understand.

But again, anyone can log on and pretend to be a DVC member (I see your own username reads DVCmember) and pretend to have points for rent. And someone on a budget who wants a good deal may fall for a scam.

You hope that most people are honest, and in dealing with a DVC rental reservation you have to trust the person you are dealing with. That is not easy considering you have no idea who you deal with.

There are recommendations on these boards to set up rental contracts, but again, you are dealing with unknown people over the internet.

I myself have 1 rental set up for Vero Beach which has so far cost me $50. The reservation has not yet been made (end of this month), but I have to trust this will happen. I've never actually met this DVC member, but I hope it goes well. Now, would I do this with a $1,200 rental? I doubt I would want to feel any uncertainty about it and probably wouldn't do it (I'm paranoid that most people aren't as honest as I am).

If I really wanted a DVC reservation cheaper than CRO prices, I would probably rent that type of reservation through ebay where there is at least some sort of feedback and recourse if the member isn't legit. It could cost more than through these boards, but at least I'd be protected if it was a scam.

You really have no protection if the person you deal with is not honest. They could take your money and cancel the reservation or not even make the reservation in the first place and just take your money. I myself wouldn't take that risk especially with larger amounts of money.

These are the reasons why we decided to buy DVC just so we were able to stay in the deluxe accommodations and not worry about renting points.

I know this post may be a little negative, but the internet is open to anyone and people are always finding ways to scam others.

That is correct.

Some things you can do to protect yourself would be to have full contact information on the person you're renting from...email, phone numbers, address...do not pay via western union or pre-paid money order.

If you are looking at renting through the DIS rent/trade board, look at the number of posts the person has made. I am in no way implying that a newer poster is a scammer...just that a person with a higher post count has some "history" on the boards.

The only way to be 100% sure is to reserve through CRO or buy your own contract. To be 99% sure look for a board member who has a long history of supporting the DVC boards (not just the rent and trade).

Understand you probably will not be getting firesale points - expect 11-12 dollars a point and a good contract. If you still feel uneasy see first answer.

You sound like this is going to be a worrisome process for you, it's not worth worrying the whole time until your scheduled vacation about whether you will have a reservation when you arrive. You are absolutely correct in that there is no guarantee of anything, if this is going to cause you stress I would book through CRO.

Correct, all the control is in the member's hands. I agree with what other posters have recommended in booking with CRO is this is going to cause worries for you. That's the only way to be 100% sure.

I am renting points for the third time and have never had any trouble. The first time I asked the owner for references as he had rented twice previously. If you are really unsure you could ask for references but again you are trusting those references on the internet.

If you decide to rent from a disboarder, go back, way back and look at their posts. You might get a very good feel for that person by thier posts regarding DVC and other issues. Ask them for references from others they have rented from. It is a risk and you are wise to consider it to be so. I hope it works out for you. Personally for me, I just book a mod when I am out of points but wanting to go to WDW. I am too paranoid. But there are many others who have had great luck. Its a risk for the renter too since you could trash the place and that then becomes their problem. So be prepared to be checked into as well!

As a member, if you need extra points, you can transfer in. You can only do it once in a year, and you can't transfer back out the same year. But having another member transfer in points will take out SOME of the risk - you'll make and control your own reservation like normal. So the risk is more of a short term thing - when do you pay the other member in what proportions before or after the transaction takes place. Cause they don't want to transfer their points to you and not get paid, and you don't want to pay them and then have them never transfer points. But the whole thing can take place quickly with a few paypal transactions and then the risk is gone.
