I rented points through Davids before. Now it's up to about 18 dollars a point. I see on the disboards that others are renting/selling their points for around 15 dollars a point.

First off is there anyway to protect yourself from being scammed by people on these boards renting points??

Also.. if I have a friend with DVC, would it be better/safer for him to buy the points and book my trip for me?? Is he able to do that?

Thanks!

While it has happened it is extremely rare that anyone is scammed using our Rent/Trade Boards, and there are some things you can do for your own protection. For instance, check the poster you're thinking of renting point from by getting their name and making sure they own a DVC contract by checking the deeds at the respective county websites. The WDW resort deeds will all be listed on the Orange County, FL, website, and the owners in California should be listed on the Orange County, CA, website. Check their posting history here on the DIS, see how long they've been members of our site, how many posts they've made, how often they post, the overall "tone" of their posts and so forth.

As far as your friend who is a DVC owner, if they find someone to transfer points into their account, those are then for all practical purposes, their points. They will make the reservation for you. So yes, that can be somewhat safer than renting directly. The only problem is, they would have to be able to transfer all the points from a single owner, as we are allowed only one transfer in or out of our DVC accounts per use year.

Great info. Thank you so much. I may contact you in the future if you dont mind.

There has been another board where a few scammers have been identified, but usually as the person wanting the reservation and then they take that reservation, doctor it, pose as the owner, sell it a few times and make off with the money. You just have to not take the cheapest price and the most unimaginable reservation. Like a F&W reservation only a few months out. Or one that you have already been told by others that it is sold out.

I rent or transfer from a friend all the time. Because she is a close friend we don't draw up a contract or anything. She has way more points than she needs and was letting her points go to waste for a few years before I told her she could rent them out. She doesn't want to rent them out via an agency, (even though I've explained to her how easily it can be done), and because we're friends she only charges me $12 per point.

She either makes the reservation for me and then gives me the confirmation # for MDE, or if I only need a few more points to finish off my own booking, she'll transfer them to me. We have the same home resort and same UY, so it's pretty easy.

Technically, DVC requires a contract for all point rentals.

Of course they do. In actual practice, what percentage of members are drawing up formal agreements when dealing with family members and close friends? Not many.
