Renting Points Question...

I'm considering renting DVC points to use later in 2005. However, my wife and I just found out that she's expecting in late December! I'd still like to plan an October trip, if possible. However, I'm concerned about renting points and having a problem come up - like a doctor's order for bedrest, for example.

Any thoughts?

(BTW, I'm sorry if this question belongs in a different forum...)

Thanks!

Congratulations on your good news!

It is my understanding that most people who rent points have a clause in the agreement that allows you an out up until a certain window of time (say 60 days prior to start of reservation - depending on the renters contract) in which you might be able to cancel without much penalty. But, in a last minute cancellation situation you would likely be responsible for the points unless they could be rented again on a short time-line.

Good luck planning your trip!

Congratulations. Many DVC Point renters don't allow any cancelation at all or if they do it is limited. So if you do rent, make sure you are aware of the details ahead of time. Renting is usually a great deal, but it sounds to me like for this trip, you might be better off going through Disney's CRO instead. That way you won't have to worry about it. Save renting for the baby's first trip.

Since most DVC owners are giving renters a very good deal it is just not practical to try to rent within the 30 to 60 day window. When I rent I expect 50% upon the signing of the simple rental agreement and the balance when I send the reservation confirmation.

Moreover, the renter is encouraged to take rental insurance to protect their vacation investment. I don't mind the extra effort to obtain the DVC resort of choice; however, trying to book holidays or other peak times can be a challenge.

Good luck with your rental.
