Maybe I am crazy or maybe I am not! When renting points isn't it a good thing to get half the payment before giving any info out? I have had people ask for the confirmation number before even getting the money. Doesn't this make for a bad situation? I would think so......

How many of you out there actually give the confirmation number over the phone before payment is given?

I am curious, we live in a society where it is so hard to trust people. I just read on the board about someone who's check bounced. I will always ask for a money order as payment.

I have rented a few times and I gave the confirmation number. I still had the total control over the points and the reservation, so if someone doesn't pay, regardless of them having the reservation number or not, I could cancel it. Thankfully I never had a problem with anyone who rented. The res. number makes people feel a little better before sending money off to someone on the internet.

As the above poster noted, you still control the points. Giving the ressie number is worthless to the renter without the written confirmation, which DVC always sends to the owner regardless of whose name the ressie is confirmed.

The confirmation number merely allows the renter to contact the resort to confirm the reservation. It doesn't release control over any other aspect, so I wouldn't be shy about sharing that information.

I would be firm with expectation of payment by specific dates and wouldn't hesitate to cancel a reservation if a payment is not met by your renter. Just make sure that any payment dates allow you the ability to meet deadlines controlled by DVC for cancellation and banking of points and base your rental policies on those criteria.

Enjoy!

Thank you for your help. I am just nervous about doing this. I realize that we act like one big happy family on these boards, but you just never know what people will do.

a live one-on-one conversation. I use the phone, as well as e-mail. I always give firm deadlines, with a few days wiggle room prior to points going into holding etc. I have rented several times (not regularly) and have rented twice (while a member), as well as transferred points.

Nothing beats a live conversation...............

Look at it from the other side also. I have rented points and if I had no way of at least checking to see if the Res. had been made why would I send $ to a complete stranger. The member has full control, you could cancel the Res. at any time even after final payment is made. Even after the renter receives the written confirmation the member could cancel and there is no notification sent to the renter of any kind. There has to be trust between the 2 parties. The times I rented I searched these boards and looked at past posts of the members and made my decision to go ahead. I also had home address, phone #'s for work and home. The renter also needs some peace of mind.

I ask renters to send $100 "good faith" via paypal for me to make ressie. Than they have 14 days from receiving the confirmation number to get me a 50% deposit. (Unless the ressie is less than 30 days away). I ask for the balance 60 days out so there is time to account for any problems (except as you can all tell, it didn't play out so niuce on my last rental - though my others have all been successful).

I agree, it is a matter of trust. I generally e-mail with renters many times checking on trip plans and reminding them of payment deadlines. Often I speak to them on the phone. They all get my home and cell number in case of a problem which gives them some comfort.

just wanted to also chime in and say that the member is definitely in full control of the situation.
IMO, the renter has a much higher risk than the member.
there is nothing to stop a member from cancelling the ressie even after the renter has paid in full.

no harm can be done from giving the ressie# to the renter.
you, as the member, will always be in control over the ressie.

We rented once, first we set the price per point, then the member called to see if they could get what we wanted, she booked the reservation, while on the phone with me, I sent her all the money by way of paypal, I think that is the best approach to handling this type of transaction. Once she saw the e0nail confirming the money being sent, within seconds, she gave me the confirmation letter. But make sure the money comes from the renters checking and not a credit card, because if it comes from a credit the owner gets hit with a fee, we found out the hard way, so I just mailed her a check for the difference, it was something like 32.00. The transacation was smooth. Then the owner mailed me the confirmation letter with our name on it.mfthew asthe tr4ea
