Renting points not allowed?

I'm a DVC member, and this is the first year that we cannot use all of our points. I have been trying to rent them out, but it's been such a hassle.

Two separate parties have cancelled AFTER I made the ressie. I called to cancel the second ressie and commented about renters cancelling-- the woman told me I was not allowed to rent out my Disney points and she would not make me a ressie for that purpose.
Is this true? Why is it forbidden when an entire board is dedicated to just that?

I've rented out points and it is okay as long as you are not doing it commercially. Why not bank your points, if it's not too late, and get a bigger room next year? If it's too late, would a family member or close friends like to go to WDW? You could rent the points to them and know they won't back out on you.

Thanks for your response. My whole family owns points already. Yes, we are one big family of Disney geeks-
I banked some points from last year and borrowed from next year to schedule a trip in October before I decided on grad school, so they have to be used by Nov 30. I did gave points to one friend for a trip in November, but I have many left and also thought it might be nice to get some compensation. I'm feeling its more a pain in the bootie though.

I think I may try to go in August instead of renting them out.

My burning question was why did the woman so rudely tell me I could not rent out points; she really seemed personally offended....??????Anyways, thanks for your thoughts- take care.

They are cracking down on commercial renters as stated in your paperwork.

Yes you can give your points for friends and family to use but you are not suppose to profit from them.. You must have came upon a CM that was trying to stick to the rules as they have been overlooked for years.

MS ends up doing a lot of extra work when people use points and don't know whats involved with doing so (they also stop others from calling that are not members). This is no excuse just an explanation from other threads.

Actually there is NO ban on profit at all, just the vague wording against a pattern of commercial activity, two totally different things.

To the OP, you were told wrong, simply call back.

Call back, but before you do so, have the wording from the users statement in hand so you can read to any MS castmember where it says you MAY rent out a reservation.

Please keep us posted as to how this turns out...renting is a huge discussion here. Good luck.

Dean's right, and there is a world of difference between renting points occasionally that you don't need and going into the business of renting DVC points. You don't need to give any explanation of what your ressie is for, unless DVC identifies a "pattern of commercial behavior," which they won't in your case.

The problem of renters agreeing to rent points and later deciding to cancel (usually because they got a lower price) is just part of the game. There are some folks on the DISboards who PM potential renters and offer them a lower price after you've done all the work.

Doesn't seem right, does it?!
Well...it's just competition in the marketplace. People on the DIS Rent/Trade boards are shopping in the bargain basement, and bargain-basement sellers cut prices to get business.

It's also one of the reasons why, if I rented, I'd do so elsewhere.

On the bright side, people who cancel after making an agreement are likely to be more trouble than they're worth anyway.

I rented a 1 bedroom villa at OKW a few years back from a seller on ebay. I was quite nervous about doing it but everything turned out great. We loved that resort so much that we are now are in the process of purchasing a resale for points at OKW.

It's been interesting to read everyone's opinions on renting and commerical renting. The people I rented from did commerical renting. The seller said that was what she did for a living.........acted like a travel agent to manage her huge amount of points (told me she had taken out a 2nd mortgage on her house to purchase a huge amount and then her sister did the same and they rented their combined points together throughout the year)

My points will be for us or our family's use only. I love Disney too much to give them up or rent them out!

Wow! Your post had my jaw dropping! I wonder if those same folks would admit to commercial renting NOW!?

Diane...I am willing to bet that my first rental experience back in 2003 (?) was with this same family (who have been mentioned here by name in several threads).

I, too, was really nervous so I called her (more than once) and she said "Relax...this is my business, I do this for a living and have done this hundreds of time. Everything will go perfectly...."

It did...but now I know better...and more important, so does she! She has totally been blasted here on the DIS and many here have given her name to DVC/DVD.

And on your next rental have some cancellation terms in place.

Just over two years ago, December of '04, I went to WDW for the first time in a long time. I saw the DVC booths, asked questions, and then researched on line. I'm almost certain that my first DVC, rented, stay was with this very same person. I read what went on with all the mush stuff about a year ago. The only thing that I can say with certainty is that the rental went perfectly. Last January I rented points on this site. Eveything went great again. I bought my own points before I used the rented points. I guess I digressed before I should have. I've been reading threads, and right now I'm pretty much ambivilant about commercial renters, occassional renters, and the different opinions that people have. I see the "they're my points" view, but I also see the the " you're a speculative booker" view. I should go to bed; I work on the 3rd shift.

I saved their ebay seller id in my favorites and have noticed that they have not posted DVC rentals in over a year. Now they have houses they have purchased in Orlando for rent. Maybe they sold their points and bought houses instead?

Maybe you could use your extra points on a city break some where else

To the OP:

You are not alone in this. I (in a past life) have also been told by a very experienced MS-Advisor, that points can not be rented, and that a crack down would be starting.

Since we are friends(from many, many calls to MS), I said I wasn't renting the points but the reservation, laughing she said, so you *DID* read the POS.

Points can't be rented, reservations can, symantecs in my mind.

I suspect renting will move underground for the next few years until this all shakes out.

You are required to notify MS that you are renting the reservation to a non-member according to the POS. If you are gifting the reservation, you don't.
