Hi, we're looking at renting DVC points for the first time. We're not DVC owners ourselves, so this is all new to me. I have a pretty good grasp of things in general, but some of the technicalities I'm not so sure of. I have a potential seller and just want to confirm that what she says she can do will work (before I get back to her). Here are the details:

*We need xxxx points to book Xxxxx in xxxxxxx. We are currently within the 11 month window and don't want to wait until the 7 month window and lose our chance at getting what we want (which was still available, last I heard). Therefore, I've been looking for Xxxxx owners to rent from, which seems hard to find (both major rental companies do not have anything for us right now).

*I've found someone who has 160 (different resort) and 30 (resort I want) points available. She says that she can get our reservation now if she borrows 11 of her 2015 points, which she is willing to do (and I'll pay $1/point more for those, which I'm fine with). So, I'm thinking that means she'd have 171 other resort) points that she'd be using to book this. Can she book My resort I want 11 months out with those Different points? Again, she is an xxxxx owner also, just with fewer points.

*I guess I'm just a little confused on home resort and booking before the 7-month window. Can anyone confirm whether or not this situation is possible?

Thank you!

Ah, the more I look into this, the more I think it is NOT possible. And there's no way she could have enough Xxxx points to use only those, right (with 30 available now)? Anyone with more experience with this sort of thing, feel free to confirm.

You are correct. To book more than 7 months out, members must use home resort points to make the reservation. For example, to book The resort you want more than 7 months from check in, only those points can be used. They can be banked points, current UY points, borrowed points, even points transferred from another member but they must be The resort points.

If booking 7 months or less from check in, any points can be used to book any resort.

Thanks, Lisa. That's what I was thinking. Back to the drawing board, I guess...

By the way, I see my original post was edited for details. Sorry, didn't realize that was an issue. It sure reads like a fun story problem now, though. :teacher: :)

You're welcome. It's possible the owner you are working with is a newer member and is confused about the rules. That particular topic ("If I own resort A and resort B can I use all my points to book either resort 11 months out") comes up a lot here.

Your post was edited because when specifics are provided (resort, dates, etc) it essentially becomes a rental request which is not allowed. It's clear you were just looking for information so no harm done but the mods need to remove the details all the same.

Yes, she's only owned for a few years, so I think she's unclear how it works with having the second resort added on. I actually searched around (before posting this) and found other things on the "can I use all my points at 11 months" topic and I emailed her saying, essentially, "hey, sorry, looks like you don't have enough home resort points to make my reservation". That's when she responded about borrowing the 11 points from the next year, which confused me because she already has enough points available between her two resorts for my reservation. I wondered if there was some special rule I didn't know about, since she was talking about borrowing points to do it with a single resort's points, rather than combining them. At any rate, looks like I'll have to keep searching.

It's funny, regarding the edited post, because I thought I was being vague by not posting dates (only month) and not posting which type of room or pricing or anything...just what I thought was the pertinent data to understand the situation. But I live over on the Trip Report boards, where we're pretty much drowning in details, so I guess it's a bit different! :rotfl: Not a problem, though, as I got the answer I needed to respond to her. Thanks again!

Okay, another question for those that have booked DVC online. I responded to the person saying that I didn't think she'd be able to make my reservation, as she only had 30 points for that resort and I needed 171. However, she responded back saying that she could indeed make the reservation and she sent a screenshot from the DVC booking site. It is a screen that says this:

"Borrow Vacation Points

Enter the number of Vacation Points to borrow from your contract(s) in the field(s) below. To complete this transaction, you must borrow this exact number of Vacation Points: 11

Warning: Borrowing is a final transaction" (etc. - just don't want to re-type this)

Then, there's a chart that shows the resort I want listed under "contract" and the "Before Borrowing" says 160, the "Amount to Borrow" says 11, and the "After Borrowing" says 149. At the bottom, it has 11 as the "Total Vacation Points to Borrow".

She has told me that these 11 are from her 2015 points. So, am I interpreting this correctly? She actually, despite advertising 30, has 160 points for 2015 (that she can borrow from) and 160 points for 2014? Maybe she just advertised incorrectly?

Please let me know if I am understanding what that point borrowing page is saying. If she really does have the points, that would be awesome.

Thanks!

Just heard back and she does indeed have 160 points for my desired resort. She was just advertising the other resort because she thought it would sell faster and she wanted to sell 190 total.

Yay!!!!!

borrowing is transparent for the renter and only affects the owner as they are taking points from next year to use this year, so there will be less points next year

this is one of the cool things about DVC over other timeshares

Ah so she does have the points needed to book 11 months out after all. Great news! I hope everything works out for you and you have a wonderful trip.

We now have a reservation and I was even able to link it with our My Disney Experience account to review it. :cool1: So excited for this trip! Thanks for the help in making my way through this unfamiliar DVC point territory! :thumbsup2 Despite the confusion, I think it actually worked out really well and was a pretty smooth process that helped both parties out.

Happy to hear things worked out for you. :) Thanks for letting us know.
