Hello. For year Iv been debating trying dvc rental through a company to see if dvc is something we would be interested in. My question is.. If I book at the 11 month window I'm assuming there is no cancelation. What would happen if something out of the blue happened like loss of job or a serious medical emergency? I'm just a very anxious person.. The likely hood of something happening isnt great but not impossible. So I'm thinking to myself if I were to get laid off in October wouldn't really be wise to go on a vacation in December with no job even if it's paid for. Thoughts?

That's between you and the member renting the points. There are no published "rules", you should get a contract with the terms. But in general, it's no cancellation. You can purchase travel insurance.

With Southwest Airlines, you can buy a cheap "get away" fare that's nonrefundable and not changeable. Or, for the exact same flight you can spend almost double the cost and get a fully refundable, modifiable business class fare.

The same thing is true for a DVC villa. You can rent it relatively inexpensively from a member private party non-refundable, or you can book it cash through CRO and gain the ability to cancel by the deadline for a full refund. You just need to assess your appetite for risk.

Me, I always book the "get away" fare. I figure over the course of a lifetime, if I lose a couple of them I will still come out ahead. YMMV.

I just recently rented for my 1st time through **************. They offer an insurance policy on points if you want. The cost is $1.40 per point that you rent. If you purchase the insurance & end up cancelling for any reason you get your money back. I'm not sure if any of the other 3rd party rental sites offer this or not.

Just as an FYI to OP, depending on when you want to go, what size villa and which DVC resort you want to 'test drive' renting from an owner or broker may not be any cheaper than what the same unit will cost for cash from Disney if Disney is offering decent discounts during the time you want to go. You really need to do the math to see the different prices, the problem being Disney discounts aren't released early enough for DVC planning during popular DVC times of year.
Before I bought I did try a unit out, but at that time Disney's cash price w/ a discount was about the same as renting the same 1 br. from a broker - so I went w/ Disney.

Most are no cancelation, most companies won't work with you to change but most individuals will within reason.

That's what I thought. Just wouldn't want my worst dreams come to reality. I guess I'll have to do some research into trip insurance.

Trip insurance is generally a good idea when a big chuck of your trip is non-refundable. Most insurance companies would cover the things you mentioned (loss of your primary income or travel party illness). Trip insurance also is usually relatively inexpensive (2-5 % of the cost of your trip).

The other thing I consider with trip insurance now is that at least for us our medical insurance is so terrible that if I end up at an "out-of-network" hospital my medical insurance won't cover it. However, trip insurance often will bridge your medical insurance.
