I was wondering if anyone could tell me their experience with "renting" (buying) points off of someone. I know there is a thread with people renting their points and I was wondering how reliable doing that is. I am always nervous about being scammed.

Thanks….

I rented off the disboards once before I bought DVC and have helped several friends rent. While there is always risk, the disboards has put in some safeguards to minimize it (minimum posts, etc). You could pay a little more and go through a business. David's is $13/point and I think Timeshare Store is renting for $12.

We rented points through the DIS in 2009 from two different sources. We got references from the renter and contacted the references before agreeing to anything. We also signed a contract (which the renter should provide) prior to exchanging any money. While this is not an ironclad guarantee - it would probably cost you more in legal fees/time from work should the other person break the contract - it at least gives you peace of mind. FOr us, it all went very smoothly and the people we rented from were very helpful on the other end.

That said, I think if I were to rent today, I would seriously consider going through some service like David's or TSS, which I didn't know about at that time. The renter makes less money, and it will cost you (the rentee) a little more because these services make their cut, but I think the extra security of it would be worth it even though it might cost you an extra $1-$2 per point versus renting direct from someone. In addition, the amount of effort it would take versus the vetting of any individual is might make it worth the extra dollars.

I'm also interested in the flipside of this discussion. What has been DVC members' experience in renting out their points to individuals? Ever run into serious problems or had renters cause damage to a room or run up other charges ? I am hopefully a soon-to-be DVC owner and have little experience so I appreciate the input.

We've rented several times in the past. Thus far our experience with renters has been great. We even have a couple that check in once a year to see if we have points available. Overall though everything has been great though we do have a contract that must be signed. Over the years I have read of some nightmares storied of damaged rooms or unpaid balances due to bad credit cards. Those are very few.......

Other's experiences may not match yours. Both parities need to do their due diligence, require a contract, and check references.

as a Dvc me:santa:member who has rented out there points in the past we have great success with the people who gave reached out to us. Most understand a certified check upon receipt of the confirmation in the rename and date and there address and there children ,,,,,, works out very well. Sometimes the other members on the the board make it hard to do
