Weve decided we might want to try tenting dvc from David's or similar source. But i want to go middle may and my husband wont get cleares from work for time off till 6 to 8 weeks prior to that. I know davids is non refundable so we dont dare book now. Is it close to impossible to rent a week mid may at AKL, beach or boardwalk (any of them would do or even a split stay) with just two or less months away? We woukd need studio or 1 bedroom

Beach Club and Boardwalk studio- no chance
AKL studio- very outside chance to none
Your best shot would be Kidani(AKV) or Boardwalk(garden/pool view) 1 bedroom

I think you'll have a rough time of it. Not just availability at those resort (almost no chance for a studio at any of them that close via rental, little chance of a one bedroom), but also owner availability - it isn't like there is a glut of owners sitting around waiting to make reservations for you. Owners need to plan their points. Rentals take some time to arrange. You might luck into a fire sale "we can't use our reservation and it just happens to overlap with your dates" existing reservation to rent, but that's a low probability. Plan on a cash ressie - DVC does not work for people who cannot plan - and that includes renters.

A studio for an entire week, even a split stay, will be next to impossible. I would make a cash reservation as soon as you are able (realizing Disney will charge the first day upfront but will re-imburse you if you cancel within five days of check-in). With a cash back-up, you can roll the dice on a studio or 1-bedroom.

this is what I was going to suggest.

I tried looking for the elusive reservation in a similar timeframe no such luck. The brokers had no points and even on rent/trade what I wanted wasn’t available. We ended up staying at CSR and they upgrade our preferred King to a suite. Best non DVC resort room I’ve had. I would just plan a hotel room. Honestly for two of you (I think that’s what you said) not that much benefit to a studio over a room (other than the couch).

Book through Disney and keep the flexibility you need.
