Renting DVC Points from Dave's

I am thinking about renting DVC points for a tentative WDW stay. It would be me and my best friend, sometime for the end of May 2016, for 5 nights. There is a great deal in which I can get a studio at Old Key West, 5 days of park tickets, and roundtrip flights for about $1900. I talked to a lady on the phone at Dave's and she explained that studios at Old Key West are available throughout the whole month of May. I guess I am just wondering how soon do I need to book before they are all gone? Studios at AKV are already booked, and OKW is pretty much the only resort that is fully available.

Any advice/experience about renting DVC points would be appreciated! I'm a total newbie so I'm just trying to figure things out :)

Most DVC properties go to mostly cash-rental (not points for DVC members) 60-75 days before a booking date, but that's an estimate. If you can book by February you would be probably okay.

Dave's site has a chart telling you time frames to book by, by resort and room type, to help in getting what you want before it's gone.

The chart on David's site says 7 months or earlier for a studio at OKW. We're just past that now if you're looking for May. So I would say the sooner you can book the better, but only after you are 100% sure you are going and won't need to cancel since there are no refunds. Once you're past the 7 month mark, availability opens up to all DVC members (rather than just those who own at OKW) so it can book up at any point.

Your plans confuse me just a bit. David's as far as I know rents DVC points and it's up to you to secure tickets and flights and the rest.
Is there another source that is offering a deal for the 5 days plus park tickets plus airfare?
Not sure who is your source for May availability, but AKV Kidani savanna view and SSR studios look to be available, although availability does change as people book or change plans, so maybe whomever is offering the 'deal' only has OKW studios?

What would be nice about OKW is that the studio there has two queen beds instead of one queen bed and a double sleeper sofa. So you each get a bed.

I think the OP is just saying that the points rental plus what she can get for tickets and airfare is a good deal. Not that David's is selling her all of those things.

I was confused by the post as well. If the OP clarifies then we can help. If it is from a site other than Dave's and includes the accommodations, I say jump on it.

Sorry for the confusion everybody! I am just looking for the cheapest deal, and OKW has the cheapest studios available on Dave's! And I would get my airfare from Southwest and my tix from Undercover Tourist :) I just added up all of the prices together to get my total of $1900. I'm only using Dave's for the hotel!

Good to know about the two queen beds, thank you!!

Ah, thx, that makes sense. When David's checks availability for you AKV Kidani standard view studios look to be pretty available in May too, depending on exact dates and those are less expensive point wise compared to many others. They do have the sleeper sofa/1 bed set up, tho'.

I haven't used David's but would suggest also looking on other sites like redweek, TUG boards, or ebay (not used ebay ever but have found TUG and redweek rentals at much less than David's).
Problem is if you only have 5 nights to go, most other sites more often rent a full week (and on redweek it's too early to look for May).
If your dates are set and you're happy with the rate, I'd go for it! Yes, you can save doing more last minute, but the flights may be much higher and maybe nothing comes through.
Good luck!

Can you actually check availability on David's? I thought you could just price it out, then they will check with owners. If it were me, I'd probably go with AKV over OKW. Or a value resort!

OP said they were talking with someone from Dave's directly though.

Thank you so much for all of your helpful responses everyone! I will definitely look into Kidani vs. Jambo.

Yes, I called the number they had on the website and spoke with a lady who showed me availability! Thanks for the resort input, we would prefer a deluxe over a value! But, is it that you just prefer AKL or is OKW a bad choice?? I've never been on the property before! I know that it's a bit isolated but the theming looks lovely!

I think the two queens are a great argument for OKW for this trip, and Olivia's is delicious.

But some of those seven night trips are RCI trades which are not supposed to be sold, only used by the owner or gifted by the owner. They can be canceled by RCI or DVC if they find out you paid to use someone else's trade into DVC. You need to rent from a DVC owner, not an RCI trader.

OKW is amazing. Beautiful, calming. It's not that far away from stuff, it just feels like it. We almost always have a car, which makes everything seem really close.

And for us, AK Jambo/Kidani (yes we've given both a shot) is our least favorite that we've stayed in (stayed at: OKW, SSR, Jambo/Kidani, WL, BW, as well as Pop, AS Music and Sports, AOA, CBR, and POR). The service we have received is just lousy, the bus situation we've encountered is just unspeakably bad, and we feel that the good stuff is available to the public (lobby, seeing the animals from the main areas, etc). It's our personal opinion based on our experiences.

YES.

OP, if you look at those sites and see mention of a $95 fee to be paid at checkin, run away. That's a trade, and as Deb said, it's not allowed to be sold.

That is true. I am currently holding a reservation that I rented from the actual owner though. The confirmation letter that came in the mail to me is from DVC.
