Friends are renting DVC points, does that entitle them to pool hop, or do you have to be the owner of the DVC points to hop?

According to the Public Offering Statement, perks are supposed to be for members and their guests, but not for renters.

Well, officially they should be members accommpanied by a blue member card to pool hop, but some have been able to do so as long as the key says "member" on it.

That's where they think they'll be able to hop. She said she's being registered as a guest not a renter. I really have no idea how it works at all, I just don't want them to get their hopes up and take the kids to a different pool and be turned away and look silly. She really needs to confirm it with the person giving them her points

The POS also states that owners need to inform Member Services if the reservation is for a renter. The owner you rent from may be choosing to ignore the rules, but don't be surprised if your friends are asked for their DVC Membership card when they want to take advantage of the perks. That is an increasing trend when wanting to use perks.

So to answer your original question, renting does not entitle them to use member perks.

Okay, sorry to ask another question, but what if you're a member and you're staying off site :scared1: . Can you show your membership card and use one of the pools in that situation?

No, you must be staying at a DVC resort on points to pool hop.

Here are the rules from the DVC website:

You and any Guests staying with you at Disney's Old Key West Resort, Disney's BoardWalk Villas, The Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, Disney's Beach Club Villas or Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa are permitted to use other Disney Vacation Club and Walt Disney World Resort hotel pools (in addition to the pool at the Resort hotel at which you're staying) if they are not at capacity.

If the pool you are visiting reaches capacity, you may be asked to leave in order to accommodate Guests of that Resort hotel. Please check with a Host/Hostess at the Front Desk of the Resort hotel you wish to visit to find out about pool-access availability. You must present your current "Key to the World" card with your Disney Vacation Club "Member" designation on it to use other Resort hotel pools. Pool hopping is not available at Uzima Pool at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge and Stormalong Bay at Disney's Yacht & Beach Club Resorts or at the leisure pools of these two Resort hotels. There are no exceptions to this policy.
