If we rent points, are we considered guests of members and don't need to pay for parking at Aulani? That's a pretty steep price to pay and want to make sure I budget for it....TIA

That's correct- no charge for self parking if on points (renting or owning). When you pull up they ask if you are dvc members and we just say "we are staying on points". They then direct you to unload and get checked in and then come down within the hour to self park your car (they valet it for free for that first hour).
We have stayed in April 2013 and Feb 2014 and rented both times
We also booked a cash room through DVC Member Services and did not pay for parking (though we are also members). We stayed on points 10 of 12 nights and paid cash 2. Free parking the whole stay - don't know if that's supposed to happen or not.
Shouldn't have to pay for parking if the room is paid for with points (or booked through MS for cash, but only a member can book for cash through MS).
There's really no such thing as a "DVC room". Under certain circumstances, Disney can (and does) rent out DVC rooms to the general public. So the parking perk depends on whether a member booked the room through Member Services. If you are a guest of a member or rented a reservation (points) for your stay, then you should get free parking.
Thank you!! My best friend may stay on my points... She's been to aulani twice (lives in LA) and paid cash. I'm doing this for her 44th bday in October
