We’re thinking of doing a trip in early June and have a room reserved at GCH. We got a decent discount on it, but I was looking into renting DVC points and it looks like we could get it much cheaper if we went that direction.

Thing is, we have never done the DVC thing and I’m unsure how that works. Any pointers would be great!

In particular, I’m wondering how the DVC rooms work with park reservations. Do you still link your hotel reservation and fall under the Hotel Bucket, or do would we end up reserving under the Park Hopper bucket?

This isn't what you're asking exactly but are you looking at an existing reservation that's being resold? If not and you're just looking at the general concept of renting points and booking DVC, it's HIGHLY unlikely that you would be able to book anything at the VGC for this June.

The DVC rooms are booked 11 months in advance. If you are going to rent an already made reservation, you will pay a premium and need to be very flexible with your dates.

If you have a DVC reservation, you can link it to your Disneyland account and then make park reservations from it just like any of the hotel rooms. There was a board sponsor that had reservations for rent. I haven't looked for it in a while, but the link used to be in the DVC forum here in the rental part. They were charging a lot, though. So, a studio was often a similar price to a hotel room, but you wouldn't have to pay tax and parking. The downside is that if something comes up and you need to cancel, you lose all the money.
