Renting a room - travel nurses

Hi,
My life has turned upside down again haha this time because my fiance walked away the day of the walkthrough for our house that was being built. I woke up early in the morning and he was sneaking things into a suitcase. Rather than doing the smart prudent financial route I chose to buy the house by myself. Now I have this beautiful lifelong dream of having a house big enough to entertain and have overnight guests But it's in a state I wouldn't even drive through let alone move to. Although the people are lovely.

One of the things I insisted on having in the house was a full ensuite. Because I'm on my own now, the mortgage is quite high compared to my income.

Does anyone have experience renting out of room in particularly with travel nurses? The answers from Google are all over the place so I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience and what they think about it.

no personal experience but I know that the need exceeded availability around us so much that one of the hospitals just purchased a big chunk of land to build dedicated housing for travel nurses so I'm assuming they must have some division in their h/r that helps facilitate things in the meantime. if there's a hospital near your house you might contact their h/r to get a feel for how these things are set up (I believe some travel nurses have the agencies they contract through handle all of this so you might be able to find out which agencies the local hospitals work with).

There are three hospitals including two major ones for the entire state located within 25 minutes of my home. There is no public transportation that I'm aware of. Of course we can still get Uber and Lyft here but I don't think the buses run this far. One of the hospitals is only 11 minutes away.

I don't know how helpful this is but I have some friends that moved from Crested Butte CO to Phoenix and they rent out their CB house to travel nurses. CB is an hour away from Durango (closest airport) and that's even pretty remote - so it's tough for travel nurses to find a reasonably cheap place to stay. Win-win, it's been a positive experience for them.

And because it hasn't been said, your (former) fiance is a weenie for doing that. You are the better person, hope this works out for you.

.I don't want to rent out the whole house. But I do have a bedroom with its own bathroom and its own walk-in closet with access to a laundry room and a bonus room that I don't use.

And thank you for what you said at the end. It's been really hard: It just happened. We watched it be built day by day as we lived only 8 mi down the road.

I don't have answers for you but just wanted to say I'm sorry you're going through all of this. Looking at the big picture, it's better to find out his true nature now than to find out years down the road with 3 children heartbroken too.

Thank you. Luckily I'm too old to bring more children into the world but I am also unfortunately too old to have made such a stupid decision to get engaged to him in the first place. I'm 59 and he is 62 cheating on me with a woman who is 70, was a bridesmaid in his wedding and is the woman he left his wife for. I didn't know this until this year.

But I wasn't blind. And I'm old enough to know better. I ignored so many red flags and I ignored my body until it scream so loud I had no choice but he's the one who packed and moved. I think I thought the house being built would be almost like having a baby saving a marriage both are stupid.

I’ve worked with travel nurses. Many stay locally and do it for the money. Some actually travel to experience different parts of the country, or distant places. The ones who stay locally have their own cars. Others may, too, if they decide to drive to their assignment so they can have their car with them. Just to clarify.

Generally it’s the agencies they work for that contract for their lodgings. I would think if you contacted some of the agencies to offer what you have, they might bite. I would take pictures to show them and have everything professionally outlined. Nurses may often be working weird shifts (overnights, holidays, weekends) and may wind up having to sleep during the daytime or be coming and going at odd hours, but chances are they won’t be around too, too much. (Working and out w friends and coworkers, etc.) It’s a good idea to rent to them as they’re vetted by their companies and will likely be pretty good tenants. Good luck.

PS I rented a room privately when I was in college. Mine was just a nice room with a bath that I had to myself upstairs and I had a spot for a few things in their fridge. I was either out working or quietly studying most of the time. It was just an older couple and me, which worked out well for all of us, Nice couple, who sometimes drove me to work when my rust bucket broke down, lol. I’m surprised more people don’t do this today. What you’re offering sounds like a nice set up. Could they keep a dorm fridge in their area? That might be a nice offering.

I already have one that they could have. I planned on plugging it into the bonus room which is on the other side of the house with the guest room. The house is brand new. I have a TV, Wi-Fi, a chair, nightstand dressers lamp in the bathroom has a closet, too. I don't have any pets. And more importantly, no men live here.

I have a close friend that swears by renting to traveling nurses! While not in-home, she rents out a casita in her backyard, so there is some oversight at that property. At her other properties, she has had virtually no problems with these monthly tenants.

my friend is a travel nurse. she always has to find her own housing. she either brings her car or does a lt rental.

Thank you! Like I said there are two major hospitals within 20-25 minutes of the house and one that's only 15 minutes from the house and they are building a fourth one that will also be 15 minutes from the house.

Every year without fail, we see at least a dozen (sometimes more) couples who break up during the process and the contracts either (sometimes very messily) fall apart or only one of the original buyers ends up taking possession. Thank you for taking the time to write that. I looked back at some old correspondence with my closest friend and right from the beginning I was saying I wasn't sure he was going to go through with it. He had already backed out on two other homes in the state we were living - but I chalked that up to he hadn't told me how bad is job was and that he wanted to leave Florida. I hated living in Southern Florida as well so moving was fine. However he didn't tell me early enough that I didn't make some financial decisions that I had to live with the impact. This time I spent a year moving things around and getting things in order and making decisions based on the idea that we were going to be married and have the tax break from the home And he would be putting down 20%. I had to pull up the deposit at the last minute and now I have a huge tax bill coming due in April.
No more ignoring red flags!
