Renting a car for trip

I just remembered today that I was thinking about renting a Mazda5 for our trip to DL. Talked to DH and he said he thought it was a good idea (my Acura TL does not get great mileage).

Does anyone know what is the best place to look for discounts on car rentals? TIA!

Try checking the Mousesavers page for car rental codes that may work for you. :drive:

Not quite understanding the logic about renting a car for better gas mileage. Do you anticipate saving enough on gas to pay for the rental?

Yes, this - plus my TL does not really have enough space for my daughter's CityMini AND all of our bags/luggage. I really liked the Mazda5 when I used it before as a rental car, so I def. would not mind renting a car just for the trip so that we have more space and save on gas...provided of course I can rent the car at a decent price. =)

Check the car rental website without using any codes before trying the codes you find on mousesavers. I did this a few weeks ago, and to my surprise when I used the code, the price jumped way up instead of down. Even when I tried to get rid of the code, I kept getting the higher price until I completely closed out the website and started over. I also noticed this happening on the websites of multiple car rental companies with codes from different places. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the car rental websites prices and discounts. Know what price they are quoting without the code, and then you will know if the code is really getting you a discounted rate. Good luck. When I checked the prices were running significantly higher than what we had paid last year or the year before. Hopefully, they have come down since then.

If you are a member of AAA, they have some pretty decent rates. The promotions they have also get better the closer you get to the dates you are going, so make sure to check back, even if you are already reserved, to see if a better promotion is applicable! Good luck!! :)

You'd be saving about 3 mpg according to fueleconomy.gov numbers. You'll save about $25 on fuel for every 1000 miles driven. Additional space is one thing but renting a car to save on gas almost never pans out. It does sound good when justifying the idea to a spouse. :rotfl2:

I noticed the AAA rates weren't nearly as nice as they were 2 years ago. I can get a full size rental from Alamo for a week for $177+ with my work discount, but AAA through Hertz wants $236+.

I got a great rate on a full size car from Hertz at LAX for our upcoming trip by using Hotwire.

One note, you seem to be sure you want a specific model of car - in my pretty extensive experience of renting cars, I don't ever remember a company that would guarantee a specific model, just the class (compact, full, etc.).

I didn't care which rental company I used, so Hotwire worked for me. It does sound as if you are renting from near your home, not an airport, so you might be able to do even better at an off-airport agency, without all the airport fees tacked on.

Good luck!

LOL Actually the hubby came up with that one, I suggested to him that we rent a car not just for the space, but because I figured he wouldn't want my new TL dinged up with bird doodie & rocks (can't remember which freeway we use from N. Cal, but I remember in the past tons of rocks, bugs & bird poop collecting our car).

Thank you all for the suggestions! I will have to check out these various sites & rates when I get a minute. Of course work WAS slow until it got closer to my trip...now I have zero time to research.

I agree with Hotwire or Priceline. The cars come from reputable companies. I used these services for hotel rooms before and I'll never do that again. But for a car they're pretty good. Another place to try is Costco Travel, if you're a member.

Oh, it's a new TL. The mileage was even closer on that one so less savings. lol

I hear you on not getting the car all beat up on the road trip. You'll probably be on I-5 from up here if you're taking the quickest route. Enough trucks kicking up junk so I don't blame you.

Costco also has coupon codes for rental cars. Some are better than others. I've also had good success with Hotwire/Priceline since you're targeting a class of car. If you really want that Mazda 5, then you're really going to limit your options to companies who carry that brand. Last I checked I think Alamo had some Mazda cars but a lot more Chevys and Nissans.

Yes, I think my 2012 is supposed to get up to 28 (assuming ALL highway miles) and I believe it is I-5 that we'll be taking down to Anaheim/SD. Living in SJ that is not often the case as most of the time it's a mix of in-roads and highways, but hubby did say my car is supposed to be more gas efficient than the older TL models, esp. considering it's a V-8.

We are Costco members & that's actually where I purchased our travel package so I should def. look into their rental car prices. Never thought to see if Costco had a deal, but it seems like Costco has everything!

Hey we (two adults and two 2-year olds, one disabled so we have to take his wheelchair too) have taken our 2009 TL SH-AWD to Disneyland 4x already ... it's headed down again tomorrow :) And the SH-AWD model gets even worse fuel economy and has a slightly smaller trunk to boot :rotfl: So ya it's doable, but you do have to get creative with packing, basically a large number of small bags versus a small number of big ones. We have those enormous Britax Advocate car seats in the back and cram a bunch of stuff in the space between them and the front seats. Having the valet wait for us to unload everything is always amusing, they have this look on their face like "you fit THAT into THAT???" :worship:

Ok kidding aside, if you're dead set on renting a car, I travel a lot for work and find Budget and Dollar at SJ airport to have the best rates in the area. I agree with the suggestion to check around because rates always change. One thing though ... if you rent from SJ airport, check your rental car's tires very carefully. Those ramps (the ones with the spikes) you drive over when entering and exiting the facility leave cuts on the tires. I'm a car nut and have noticed little slashes on the tires of many rental cars. Whenever I see it, I always request a new car to mitigate the risk of a blowout on the 5. The rental car places know it, too, the employees have even told me that they've lost their own tires to those ramps, but since most rentals go to business travelers who couldn't care less, no one ever does anything about it (okay, that and they're mandated by the airport or something along those lines is what I've been told). For taking your family down to So Cal, be sure to look over the tires carefully, I've made the drive between the Bay and LA probably about 200+ times in my life and have suffered 2 blowouts, and trust me, it's not fun...

Ok starting to blab now, but one last thing ... EVERYTHING is negotiable. Oftentimes if you call the rental car place and just sweet talk a bit, you can get a discount. It's harder for holiday weekends but SJ airport has so many rentals sitting around, inevitably someone will have excess inventory, especially at the last minute.

^Ummm ok so brain lapse moment in my post above ... I'm headed down tomorrow and you're headed down in 2 weeks ... somehow I thought you were going over Memorial Day too, my bad :) That leaves plenty of time to find a discount then. Still check those tires if you go through SJ airport, though, I honestly can't believe they rent cars out like that, it's a real danger and I'm not the type who's usually very paranoid about this sort of thing...

A lot of great info - thanks! Will definitely need to check the tires or have DH do it if we end up renting a car. I do feel like we may be crowded in our TL even though it's fairly spacious for a sedan, but we will prob. have a ton of bags competing with the stroller for trunk space.

Yup I hear you ... we bring my son's wheelchair, an umbrella stroller for his sister, and of course our own stuff. Most of it is my wife's :) I'm a light packer since I do a lot of business travel (okay plus I'm a dude and allowed to be smellier right?!?!) and can get by on a single backpack for a week easily so long as weather conditions remain constant, which of course we know they will because it's summer in California :) Getting a bigger car will definitely lower the pressure to cram cram cram, and of course allow more space to bring back souvenirs and what not for little ones (okay I guess that goes for your own souvenirs too hehe).

But yeah definitely check out the tires ... I know it sounds bizarre but I'm not kidding there. Some cars are fine and some aren't. I talked to a couple of rental agents about it and they're all aware of the situation, they say it depends how the cars are driven over the ramps. In either case look over all 4 tires from the inside to the outside (I bring a flashlight because I'm obsessive like that) and make sure there aren't any deep gashes. Truthfully I don't care either when I rent for business, but when it's a longer drive and I have my kids in the car, then I start to do stuff like bring flashlights when renting cars :lmao:

I used this site as well and found a reasonable price from budget. I think you can justify renting since you will save a bit on gas and save the miles/wear on your car. Good luck!

Doh! I can't believe I didn't even think about the fact that my car was a lease until you mentioned miles! :rotfl: I mean, I was thinking about saving my car from the damage of rocks etc., but I completely forgot that when we leased the car we picked the lowest mileage (10K or 12K?) ...something like that - and I definitely don't want to end up paying overage later!
