I need to book a car from MCO, Oct 6-13th for 2 adults with a suitcase or two each. I have no idea what is a good deal and what isnt. Does anyone have a ball park figure.
Any other tips, I would appreciate it, until then I will be searching and reading.

We just rented a car for the first time at MCO last week. From what I understand, the car rental deals usually come out a few months before, so it might be a little early to find october deals. I started looking first at carrentalsavers and other travel sites to start getting ideas. We booked a ford escape for $202 through Budget. When we got to the airport they upgraded us to an expedition for a small increase per day (we ended up taking 3 kids so the upgrade was well worth it).

Good luck on finding a good deal!

Find the best deal you can today and book it. Then keep checking. Either the price you have will be the best deal, or you'll find a better one. When you find a better one, book it, and cancel the old one. Mousesavers.com is a good place to start. They list lots of coupons and discount codes. Most rental companies allow the use of a discount code + a coupon, one of each.
Be wary of any code that includes free insurance. Usually it's a business or membership type of discount where they could ask for ID at the counter.

We find the best deal is using the Costco code with Alamo. I like Alamo that they allow me to choose the vehicle. We can skip over one that smells like smoke or with a dark interior that will be hot. The kids like a sunroof, etc.
I also like that I can skip the counter and use their touch screen kiosk which is basically right next to the long line of crazy people who don't know that the kiosk is about the same level of difficulty as an ATM machine. It prints a receipt and I take it with me, choose a car and at the exit booth show my printed receipt, DL, CC, and the hang tag from the rearview mirror. Easy peasy.
If for some reason you choose to not use a coupon (incl e-coupon codes) you can do online check in and skip the kiosk step completely. Just walk out the rental car garage across the street and choose from Alamo's section.

OTOH, if having a free addl. driver is important to you Budget allows a spouse to drive with no addl charge.
I believe that is the case with Alamo but only if you sign up for their Insiders program. I don't know how it works with adding the 2nd driver and using the kiosk. The one time I tried to do it, it kept adding in the addl driver fee even though Costco members shouldn't be charged it either.
Maybe someone with recent experience can elaborate; we haven't rented in a while.

hth! :goodvibes

Make sure you don't book a deal which is non-refundable. Also check to see what insurance you may or may not need based on your auto insurance & Credit Card.
If you book a refundable deal as a PP said you can always cancel if something is better later.

Oh yes! Good point! Never pre-pay unless your trip is extremely close. Like the day before.:thumbsup2

Listen very carefully when you are at the counter. I've had them try to sneak a charge by me by the way they worded it.

Bring the car back with a full tank; don't have them fill it.

Get receipts at the tolls in case of a discrepancy. You can bypass the e-tolls if you are going to WDW, you don't need their transponder. Bring some quarters if you will be exiting to get groceries at an unmanned toll.

Fix the mirrors and know how to turn on the wipers before you leave the parking lot. I still forget to do that!

I'd say that depends. I rented a car through expedia.ca for $134, way less than anything available anywhere else. It was a prepay, but I take my chances sometimes. It worked out great, no problems at all.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I feel a little more prepared. I love the idea of a kiosk and skipping the counter!!

- Register for the free memberships at the various companies you're interested in (Alamo Insiders, National Emerald Aisle, etc.).
They are good for at least 10-20% off rack rates.
- Search Google for coupons and promo codes.
- Definitely go to the car rental area on Mousesavers.com - lots of good info on there, including basic car rental info.
- DON'T prepay - you can book, rebook, and rebook again as prices drop (and they will as you get closer to Oct).
- Check prices often - several times a day if possible, esp as you get closer to your date.

Seconding looking at carrentalsavers, as I scored a a weekly rental at MCO for $105, including tax and fees and since I was splitting the cost with two other people, my share was only $35, only 5 bucks a day.

We got a great deal with National. If you sign up for a frequent flyer number with KLM (no need to book a flight) they give you access to discounts with their partners, of which National is one. You get a code from the KLM site to use when you book with National. As was mentioned sign up for National Emerald Club. You bypass the counter and you get to pick your car and go.

For example we had a rate of $820 with Budget out of San Francisco airport for 1 week. I got the KLM/Naitional code and paid $348 and that include free Collision Damage waiver among other items.

Also, read the contract from your credit card company to see what type of automatic car rental insurance you get (if any) by using their card to pay for the car.

It's actually a few WEEKS before. I'd say sometime around 21 days out for the start of your rental is the time to spend a lot of time looking for the best deal.

Like other have said, its good to have a reservation in case they suddenly change how they price. But the past seven year or so, the prices go down as you get very close to your dates....like sometime cut in half or more.
