We were going to use National or Alamo to use our DVC or AP discounts - advice /preferences/experiences??

Also we have never rented a car before - but with a very independent 20 month old - Disney Transportation is getting more and more frustrating!!! So I looked online for prices - is that what we pay??Is there a mileage charge also I read that you want to do the full tank of gas option - which ones do that??

Can we rent carseats through them also? We use CARES to fly for our youngest and do not want to lug car seats!!!

Any advice would be great!!!

The prices you see quoted are not the prices you pay. Mileage is usually not extra but there are various taxes and fees tacked on that can add quite a bit. Generally when you book on-line, you will go through a few windows where you make selections, among which will be car size (usually the larger the car the higher the price but that is not always true), whether you want a carseat, add any discount codes, and ultimately get total price with the taxes and fees. You should not opt for any insurance unless your own car insurance excludes coverage for your renting a car (most policies cover you). Your car comes with a full tank of gas. The full tank of gas option allows you to pay for a full tank refill in advance and then you can return car without having done your own refill. Do not buy it unless you intend to return the car close to empty on gas, and few ever do that. Better to just get gas shortly before returning -- if you return it full you get no extra charge. If you return it 1/2 full you get an extra charge to fill it up but that charge for 1/2 tank is less than the full tank you pre-pay for under the full tank pre-pay option. In other words, go in with the mindset that the reason the rental companies offer insurance and things like full tank refill options is to make huge amounts of money selling things to renters that they do not need.

Note, in looking for a car, don't limit yourself to National or Alamo although for convenience you should get a rental where the rental pick-up and drop-off are right at the airport -- there are a number of those at Orlando including National/Alamo, Avis, and Dollar. You should particularly check Dollar's rates because they are often less than National or Alamo even if you have a discount code for them. Also, rates tend to change fairly often. Thus, if you order a car, keep checking once in a while for lower rates up until time you go. Find a better rate and you can reserve again and cancel prior resrvation.

Something I found when pricing my Christmas trip this year is that renting the car at the airport isn't necessarily the cheapest place to get it.

I plan to take Disney's Magical Express from and to the airport, then pick up my car at the Hertz counter at the Shades of Green Resort. Using the AAA web site, I was able to find a rate at Shades of Green that saved me almost $300 off the airport cost. (I'm also saving a day on the rental because I'm turning the car back in the day before our departure -- we're there for 8 nights, so I'd have had to pay an extra day fee if using it to get to the airport the next morning.)

It's not quite as convenient, but it really isn't too bad -- especially for that kind of savings. I'll take DME to get to my resort, then Disney transportation to get to the Polynesian, then I'll walk across the street to SOG to pick up the car.

Other rental car locations that can be reached with Disney transportation and a little walking are: National/Alamo at the Dolphin Hotel or Magic Kingdom Car Care Center; Dollar at the Regal Sun Resort (right across the street from Downtown Disney), and Avis at the Hilton (also right across from DTD).

If you're an AAA member, check the rental car prices through the AAA web site instead of the rental car's web site. They'll push you toward Hertz, but you may get a better deal through them than you can find on your own.

As far as the pre-paid gas, this is a personal preference. You need to decide how much gas you're going to use on your vacation. If you think you'll empty most of the tank and be able to turn it back to them on "E", then the pre-pay option is the way to go. However, you certainly don't want to buy a whole tank of gas, then turn it back to them unused. (There's no refund for gas you didn't use.) The biggest up-side to having a pre-paid tank is that you don't have to spend the time to find a gas station on your way back to the airport to top the car off. Just about any rental company offers the pre-paid tank.

You can rent car seats from just about any rental car company, too. There should be a place to check that you need them on the web site when you make the reservation.

One other thing to do before you get to the rental counter is call your insurance company. Ask them if the policy you have for your car covers you when you're driving a rental car. Also, if you're going to pay for the rental car with a credit card, you can call the credit card company/bank and ask them what coverage you get automatically through them when paying with that card. If you have several cards, call each to find out which gives you the best coverage. The cost of insurance from the rental car company is very high, and won't be part of the estimate you get online. However, in many cases, you don't need it any way, because you already have coverage.

Another thing that costs more and isn't reflected in your online bid is additional drivers. This can be as much as $10-$15 per day, depending on the company. If possible, pick a person who will do all the driving, and have that person rent the car. If you absolutely need the flexibility of having more than one person driving, be sure to register the additional driver. (It'll cost you, but you really, really don't want to be in an accident if an unregistered driver is behind the wheel.)

As mentioned by the previous poster, the online bid is never the price you're going to pay -- even if you don't add extras like pre-paid gas, extra drivers, or insurance. This figure is usually the "base rate." After they add the airport or resort fees, taxes, and other additional fees, the final cost will wind up being a good 20%-30% higher than the bid that came up in your internet search. For example, on my booking, the Base rate is $341.60. In smaller print further down on the screen, it tells me my approximate total charges will be $419.76.

I've rented cars for WDW trips for years. I went with "less-expensive" companies along the way, but I haven't found any that is as good a deal as Alamo!! Most are off-site from the airport, and you have to wait for a bus to take you to a depot where you wait in line to do paperwork, then you wait in line to get your keys, then you wait in line to get the car off their lot . . . not worth it. Alamo is in the airport, they let you choose whatever car you want, their check-out / check-in systems are super fast, and the price/convenience balance can't be beat. NO - I don't work for them; I just love them!!

Renting a car seat can be costly. Prices range from $10-$15 a day. While it is inconvienent to lug a car seat, it may be a cheaper option, even with a baggage charge.

Otherwise, I prefer to rent a car because of the independence and control I have with my own transportation. I will have to look into the ME and renting on property option for future trips. Especially since airport rental offices have additional taxes and charges.

Enjoy your trip.

We used to rent Alamo or National and pick up at the Dolphin. Then the last few times we used Dollar and picked up the car at the Regal Sun resort on hotel boulevard and returned it to the airport when we left. We used ME to get to our resort. Dollar will pick you up but we just took the bus to DTD and walked across the street to the hotel. The cost was considerably less than any of the other companies. As noted check with your insurance company and your credit card company about insurance. We never take the insurance but if you are not covered with either of the above you may want to. We also always return the car with a full tank of gas, filling it up at the Hess station across form DTD which usually has the best price around. Last trip we did not rent at all and found the bus transportation to be great. Even when we rent a car the only place we use it is to go to a water park or for off site shopping.

I'm what you might call a "control freak". I always rent a car simply for the freedom. To me, the time you save not having to wait for buses outweighs the extra bucks you have to pay to rent a car. We simply budget for the rental. Plus we have family that live in the Orlando area so it's convenient to visit them.

The real reason we rent...To eat at Sonic!!! They constantly advertise in Rhode Island but the closest one(last time I checked) was in New Jersey! That's a 3+ hour drive!! The food and novelty of the experience are great!

Last trip we used one of the offiste rental companies...what a complete nightmare! Next time we will either rent from a company at the airport or...I do like the idea of using ME and then going to the companies at the hotels outside of DTD. I will definitley be looking into that for our next trip.

If you rent and use a CC for their rental protection make sure you talk to them to find out exactly which options to accept and which ones not to. If you make a mistake in that area you will void the entire rental protection they offer.
