I am in the VERY early planning stages for our next visit.

Right now, we are planning our next visit for the last week of (Date Removed). We usually stay at one of the value resorts but would like to try to something different and are very interested in renting DVC points for (resort). I just don't know if renting DVC is even an option for us.

Our last visit we did some resort touring and fell in love with the (Resort) and my son was so excited about the animal viewing area. Our next trip will be to celebrate our sons 13th birthday and I just know he would love this! Without renting points, unfortunately I don't think spending the week there would financially be feasible.

However, our son has some big medical issues and healthcare needs and medical emergancies tend to come up (more often than we would like) out of the blue and if I've read the info on some of those DVC rental sites - reservations are non-refundable. Is that always the case? Is it different renting from individuals? Did I also read that 11 months in advance is the recommended window for reservations?

Also, we would need an accessible room with a roll in shower.

Go ahead and tell me what I hink I already know - DVC isn't going to work for us, is it?:headache:

I edited our the date and resort info so it would not be considered a reservation wanted type posting. :)

To answer your questions, renting is a private transaction between you and an individual DVC owner. There is no standard refund policy, as there would be renting directly from Disney on a cash reservation. Rental refund policies will vary some from owner to owner, and you would need to address your concerns with the owner from whom you are considering renting. Most owners do consider the rental a final transaction, but some owners may be willing to work with you.

One of the problems with medical emergencies and DVC is that if a reservation is cancelled within 30 days of arrival, the point used for the reservation have restrictions. The points can only be used to rebook a room 60 days or less prior to arrival, they can not be banked and must be used by the end of the owners use year. Even if cancelled prior to 30 days, depending upon the use year of the owner, they may not be able to be used. If a reservation is cancelled within 4 months of of the end of an owners use year, those points are outside the banking window for that owner, and still have to be used or lost by the end of the current use year.

A use year runs for 12 months, but not a calendar month. For instance, my use year is June. I'll receive my 2012 points on June 1. If I were to bank those points, I'd need to do so by January 31, 2013. For any reservation I may have between February 1, 2013 and June 1, 2013, if I were to cancel, I'd have to make new reservations and stay using those points by June 1, 2013, or those points would be lost.

From a single rental standpoint it comes down to whether you want to risk it for the potential savings/upgrade or not. Ultimately you'll need to take the risk, no renter will without additional potential benefits. While there is no standard, I don't know anyone that would rent fully refundable in this situation and most wouldn't give you any refund options at all. You'd also need to plan in advance since you'd need a guaranteed HC villa. Even if you find someone willing to work with you they will likely want to increase the price as compensation for the additional risk, only make a portion refundable and still give you a cutoff time of at least 30-120 days. Of course CRO will rent to you and you might be able to get a discount there but even they are going to have cancelation restrictions. However those are restrictions you're already risking by reserving a value, assuming you do it in advance.

While it's against RCI's policy to allow rentals, I know some do so. If you can find one of those you might be able to get it cheaply enough to warrant the additional risk.

Thanks Chuck and Dean for your information - it was very helpful!!!

Unfortunately I was understanding correctly the information I was reading.....:sad1: I was afraid that going the DVC route probably wasn't going to work for us, it was just wishful thinking on my part....... Luckily, I have some time to think on this.

Thanks again!

I you are looking at doing this for the trip you have described in your countdown, you don't want to take too much time to think about it. This is a popular time for DVC members to visit WDW and rooms will fill up quickly. You might want to start watching the rent board offered here on the DIS to see if anything comes up that you might be able to work with. Good luck, I think it would be a wonderful experience for you and your family.

Sometimes points come up at the 30 day mark or at the last minute. I would watch for those also and see if you can make last minute changes to get into a DVC rental situation. Good luck in any case. The good news is that any WDW vacation is a good one.

Points may come up, but there might not be anything to book, except maybe a day here or there, if anything. Points are only as good as the availability of the resorts. And what you see on the Disney Reservation Center website are not available for points. Two different inventories.

Any by your countdown timer, you are not looking very early for DVC. In fact, you are probably too late.

Haven't had a chance to get back here, things have been crazy the
last few weeks but I wanted to thank everyone for their input!

The countdown in signature is sooooo wrong (guessing I need to go change
that, I hadn't paid any attention to that)! That was from our trip last December. We are actually planning for September 2013.

Appreciate all your help, but I think I'm just going to scrap the whole idea of renting points and just book at value or moderate resort instead......it doesn't matter really matter where we sleep and shower and no matter where we end up - at least we'll be at Disney World!!

Thaks again!
