Hello,
I realize that there are several threads that already discuss the option of renting a car in St Maarten. After reading these threads, Im inclined to choose this option, rather than a DCL excurion, during our day in St Maarten. The main reasons for this choice are: 1) everyone seems to agree that driving on St. Maarten is relatively safe and easy (despite the fact that there are little to no road signs and address numbers), 2) the island is relatively small and easy to tour in one day (or even one morning), 3) there are many interesting things to see (beaches) and do (shopping) around the island, and 4) expense of renting a car is much less than a comparable DCL excursion. Do you agree? Are there other advantages or disadvantages?
For those of you who have rented a car in St Maarten (particularly from Thrifty), could you please let me know exactly how this process works? Do you reserve your car via the internet, telephone, or onboard the Magic? When you disembark in St Maarten, do you walk to the Thrifty office to pick-up your car, or do you need to take a taxi? Or are the cars lined up and waiting for you at the port? And how much time would you budget for touring the island by car? I realize that this depends upon how much time you spend at the various beaches, shops, etc., but Im just wondering how much time I should budget for this island tour. Thanks very much for your help.
