I have been comimg to WDW since 1986 and most of the time i have had access to a car. This time i am staying at the Saratoga Springs resort with 5 people including a 4 year old. I have rented a car before, with out a child, now i am wondering if a rental car is really worth it. I get a great discount through my work. Any thoughts on this?

If you've always used a car, you will miss it, imho. You can get around WDW property w/o but it really adds to your time.

If you will be at WDW for 5 days or longer and plan to make at least two trips per day to either the parks or other resorts, you would probably find a significant value in having a rental car. You could easily free up an one and a half hours or more per day by having access to your own transportation.

Yup That is the way i am thinking as well. Especially if we are making ADR in a Resort and not a Theme Park. Thanks

Saving the cost of a rental car and just using free Disney's Magical Express and free WDW transportation can be a good option if you're primarily just going to the theme parks.

You'll normally save time to MK if you use the bus instead of driving. The MK has a huge, distant parking lot, and requires walking, a parking lot tram and a monorail or ferry. Even if you rent a car, I would recommend using the bus to MK.

To the other three major theme parks, it's a matter of luck whether a car or bus is faster. Sometimes a bus comes quickly; sometimes the wait is longer. Buses go to locations near the park entrance, while cars have to parked where a parking lot CM tells you to park. Although there are parking lot trams, the walk to the tram pickup in the lot can be longer than the tram ride, especially at Epcot.

Where a rental car wins is if you're going to other non-MK resorts or off-site locations. If you have dinner reservations at Boma, Cape May, and Artist's Point, you're much better off if a car. If you plan to leave WDW property for shopping, dining, or attractions, using a taxi cab can get expensive.

One thing I've noticed on this forum is that there are some people who would not dream of being without a car. It seems to be more a matter of control than anything else. There are people who hate the uncertainty that comes from not knowing if a bus will arrive in 1 minute or 15 minutes. They would rather deal with driving, parking in huge theme park parking lots, and dealing with getting from their car to the park entrances.

I've successfully stayed at several WDW resorts, including Saratoga Springs, without a car. I use a service to bring groceries. It all worked well.

Horace I have to disagree. We have found that driving to the MK was not as bad as we thought. We are rope drop people and get close parking spaces in the morning. Trams run often! And the boat ride in the am is quite lovely.

As far as leaving the park in the afternoon, it's nice to get to your car without having to wait for the bus. Returning in the evening we found parking even closer than the morning. It wasn't as difficult as I expected.

Personally, I prefer the extra walk to my car over waiting and then riding an overcrowded bus.

We found driving to the MK a pain! I'd much rather use Disney transportation for MK. If you like eating offsite or at the resorts then having a car can be handy.

We've been with and without a rental car. There are usually some good deals to be had and for the sake of convenience it's been worth it at times. There are alot of other things to do besides Disney in the area, places to eat, shopping, etc. Remember you're on vacation have a good time either with or without a car.
