Rental car location return

I am hopeful someone has resolved this issue and can help me. We plan to rent a minivan upon arrival at Orlando airport and use it for a week and then we want to return it either locally at Disney or return it upon arrival at Port Canaveral before leaving for our cruise. The problem is that the cost of the week's rental more than doubles when not returning it to Orlando airport. We had originally planned on using the Magical Express to get to the ship and subsequently back to the airport at the end of our vacation but now we don't know what to do with about our rental car. Any suggestions other than to pay double for the rental car?

Here are my suggestions:

Book a 1-week, 1-way rental with Thrifty Car Rental using corporate #004M001010 (Orlando Magicard rate). Pick up at MCO and drop off at Cape Canaveral. They will probably drive you or arrange for transportation to Port Canaveral. Phone them to verify, if you like. Then see what the cost looks like.

Have your DH return the rental car to the airport the preceding day and take Mears or some other service back to WDW. It shouldn't take more than 90 minute total or cost more than $25. One consideration, is that sometimes returning a car early changes your rental agreement thus the price. I would call that specific desk and inquire first.
