rental car keys

DGF and I will each need a key for the rental car marathon weekend. The keys and remote are usually bound with a coated metal cable. Will they have a fit if we cut that and separate the keys?

Surely they expect that, right?

I've broken the metal cable ties before and as long as you return it with the keys given to you, they don't care. Also, sometimes there is an extra key/remote in the trunk of the vehicle in an envelope (usually marked as "documents" or similar) and in either the tirewell compartment or removable side panel.

or you could ask them when you pick the car up. But this could maybe be one of those cases that it is better to ask forgiveness than permission.
