Rental car help!!

I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to rental cars. We want to rent a car for the week for our trip in September. I have tried every code known to man at various rental agency websites. Despite that, I can't come close to some of the great deals I've seen reported here. What am I doing wrong? If anyone could offer up some suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.
