Rental car discounts?

We have now decided since we are spending one night at WL and then transferring to AKL for the week the best bet would be a rental car.
Is there any rhyme or reason to the deals on renting a car?
As the date gets closer do the rates go up? And since we would like to rent within the mco terminal will there be any codes available?

You might also consider using Priceline. Almost all the companies they use are in the terminal...Hertz is the only exception, and their shuttle is totally painless. Find the lowest rate you can, and then bid below it on Priceline.
