If I rent a car out of MCO and head for the B-Line or one of the other toll highways that will take me towards Disney World, will the rental car automatically have a Sun-Pass transponder in it, or do I have to purchase one and put it in myself?

As I understand it, no the car will not automatically have one but several agencies offer this as an option just like the many fueling options available. You could also pick one up but you have to activate it once you buy so that probably doesn't help you. Activate means get on line (or the phone) and connect a credit card to your new transponder.

Best info I have on the beast anyway....

Since there are only 2 tolls each way between MCO and Disney, this option is an extremely bad value. Using the 528 (Beachline) the two tolls total $1.75 each way; using the 417 the two tolls total $2.50 each way. To pay an extra $2.50 per day for the convenience doesn't make sense to me.

We just pay the tolls with cash and make sure to get a receipt. Have read in past posts that some of the rental car agencies have charged for using a sunpass when the renter didn't. Also the agencies charge a hefty fee to drivers that go through the sunpass booth without the sunpass. Have read that on here also.

the flipside to this arguement - which IS a valid one - many times as I zip thru a booth on the Beachline with my pass I see a 15 vehicle backup at every "pay" lane ..... less so on 417. What's the value of a few minutes of your time? I dunno ....

The toll authority has also been cutting back on staffing. There may only be one pay lane and the lines have been long.

I'll have to give it some thought, but the SunPass option is tempting due to its convenience and speed, even though it is more expensive.

Thanks to all posters for the good information.

If you come to Florida at least annually you might consider just paying the $25 and owning your own SunPass. You can purchase one on the internet in advance from: www.sunpass.com The balance on the transponder never expires and is valid statewide on toll roads and toll bridges. They're also sold at Publix and CVS stores as well as service plazas on Florida's Turnpike.

Also the mini-sunpass is available for $4.99 which is a credit to your account one you activate. We were charged a $25. admin fee along with the .75 toll that we missed. The only downside is that you cannot activate the sunpass until you get your rental because you need the licence number. I guess you have to make sure you get in the right lane for the cash.
