Next year in april im planning a visit to WDW. My friends' family will also be going and theyre staying onsite at Old Key west. Im joining them but only for a few days. im thinking to stay offsite as im going alone and want to save some money. I will have a rental car and they will not. Im hoping to be able to -register- my rental on their room so i can easily park at their hotel if i visit them and also save parking money at the parks on the few days i will not be joining them. Im assuming this is possible and parking at the resort for guests is still free.

Anyone has some experiences with this

You will have no trouble. Just tell the guard you are visiting your friends and they will let you in.

Im sure that will not be an issue, but will i also be able to get my car booked on their room so i can go to the parks and do not have to pay for parking. How do they check that at the parking gates? Through magic bands or do you get a something to allow you to pass the pay booths?

Magic bands. If you have a magic band and it shows you are a resort guest, you get to park for free.

You can't really register your rental on their room. They check that you are eligible for free parking through magic bands. If you aren't a resort guest or you aren't with a resort guest, you aren't eligible for free parking and will have to pay.

As you said in your opening post "parking for guests is still free". You will not be a guest of OKW, so you are not eligible for free parking. Your Magic Band is scanned to verify where you are staying.

The free theme park parking benefit is attached to the guest, not the car. It's the guest that has to be registered (as a guest of the resort) in order to get free parking, not the car, because it's the guest's magic band that gets scanned at the parking lot booth.

You will be able to park at OKW while visiting your friends, there's no charge for resort self-parking. But the only way for you to get free theme park parking is for your friends to add you to their reservation for the days that you'll be visiting the parks.

The cheapest way (doing it right) would be to pick them up and use their MB to park at the parks. If they add you to their room they will be charged an additional adult guest fee (I think $25) per night.

If the friends are staying on a points DVC reservation (their own or rented) at OKW there will be no additional fee to add OP for a couple of days. They must be under the maximum occupancy to add OP, tho’.
OP have you looked into renting points to stay in a studio at OKW yourself? It might be less than paying Disney cash prices. You could even use DME & Disney transportation and not bother paying for a rental car saving money that way too.

True, if they are renting points. I just took it as a non-DVC room. Good idea about checking into renting points, OKW & SSR can be had at the last minute a lot of times.
