Rent/transfer help

Looking for simplified information to help get me started... We are DVC members that have a trip planned in **** for 4 adults and 2 small children. We originally thought we would stay at a moderate... But Idea of renting points sounds like it could be an option - maybe a better option.
Here's the problem... I don't even know where to start. We looked at the dis-sponser site and although it seems very safe and well put together... It would cost over $600 more at $13 pp through that site than it would to try to do it ourselves on the rental/trade board.
Any help/ info would help- I have read some of the threads on here... But am still unsure on some of the basics. How does a transfer of points work? If points are transferred, are they ours to use/make reservations with and use or lose?

Once the points have been transferred ito your account, they are yours. You make the reservations with them. Just remember that transferred points retain their original home resort 11 monh advantage and use year month.

I'm thinking home resort wouldn't matter so much in this case because I am traveling in *...and we are already within the 7 month window. Is that correct?
How does the use year work?

Is there a thread that suggests the best way to transfer funds and points from one person to the other?

You are correct. Any home resort points would work for * right now. The transferred points will retain their own UY, so you just want to be sure that whatever points get transferred in are good for trips. In your case, you could get Dec 2009 points, or pretty much any 2010 points (except December).

Inside the 7 month window, home resort doesn't matter. But use year might, as the poits need to not "expire" before your trip. Although, transferred points can be banked (after the transfer), and then used for the reservation.

I haven't ever transferred points myself, but it seems that usually some amount is paid before the transfer, and the balance immediately after the transfer. Most people use paypal.

Paypal doesn't protect anyone.
