Moderators, if this is in the wrong place, please move....sorry for any inconvenience.

I haven't read through the rules and regulations for some years now (we own since 2000). I'd have to dig it all out, so I thought perhaps I could ask my question right here.

We've only rented out points to a co/worker friend many many years ago, and only once, so we are newbies with renting. Are we officially allowed to rent our points, per DVC/DVD rules? Are we allowed to collect money for a rental?

Also, if we do rent out points, how does the Renter obtain trip insurance for the rental price of the points? Just want to go into this with a better understanding.

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Regarding renting - yes, DVC owners are allowed to rent and collect payment for that rental per the POS. Collecting money for transfers is prohibited per that same document although transfers themselves are allowed.

If doing a rental the POS also states that there should be a rental agreement and that MS should be notified it is a rental. You'll see a check box if doing an online rental.

Be aware though that periodicallly there have been mentions of CM's that tell people that they can't rent. If that would happen just ask for a supervisor because that CM needs more training.

Thank you! So when I call MS to give them all the info of those staying in the room, etc., I need to mention to MS that it's a rental? Correct?

Thanks again.

Technically, yes unless it were to a relative. But do most do this? I think it's more likely that they don't.

Anytime you are compensated for the reservation, you need to notify MS that it is a rental. If you gift it, it is not a rental. As long as you are not commercial, you should be okay with renting a reservation.

BUT, if you transfer points, there is not supposed to be any compensation for transfers.

Thank you! As these are borrowed points, they cannot be transferred, but...noted.

I just called MS to change a reservation to the name of a person renting the reservation, and I was told it is illegal to rent. These are not transferred points, the are rented points. I'm a little bit freaking out and actually afraid to bring it further to the attention of a supervisor. This is the first time we ever rented points.

Does anyone have the actual wordage on the rules in the POS? My paperwork is not reachable.

Thanks,

Don't freak out. Call back and complete your transaction. Give the names you want on the reservation.

Later you can recount your experience to DVC. Someone here will have a link.

Two or three years ago I had to rent out my points. It was a great experience in that I was able to save points that had gone into holding due to cancellation and borrowing. In fact it was so easy I was tempted to rent ALL my points because people wanted them! I came to my senses and saved them for me, lol.

DeeCee735, do not freak out. As others have said, occasional renting is specifically allowed in the POS, hence the rule that we need to inform DVC it is a rental. What is prohibited is "commercial renting" which is really not defined in the documents. Currently, DVC looks for a consistent pattern of repeatedly renting your points before taking any action and invoking any restrictions. The CM you spoke with needs to be retrained.

One example of "commercial renting" given by DVC in the past was if an owner set up a website specifically dedicated to renting their points on a continual basis.
