Rent points or Buy a resale to resell it in 7 years

I have accumulated 355 points in the last 4 months with 3 resale contracts. Our normal travel party is just my son and my wife and I. So a Studio is more than fine for our plans and we basically bought SAP's at SSR with 255 of those points. We have 100 points at Poly which we intend to use one trip per year on.

This number of points is actually perfect for the traveling we have done for the last 9 years of going to WDW.

However recently it occurred to me that I would like to be able to take my parents(in their 80s) on a few trips while they are able and my son is still living with us. It made me wish I had a few hundred more points to accommodate larger point usage for a 2 br or a grand villa. Each of my resales I felt I got the best deal for the Use year/ PP and available points. But I had long term goals in mind.

I am wondering if I should not hunt for a banked point contract to (rent) for a few years to accomplish this goal or if renting the points may make more sense? Also what is the best resort for a 2 br or villa that has the availability in a 8-11 month window?

I say if you are comfortable spending the money buy another contract now. Studios are fine no question about that, but after you stay in a 1 bedroom you might decide those points are better off used on your family trips instead of rented out. It's nice to have that option.

You mentioned taking your parents while your son is at home, what about future trips with grandchildren and need for 2 bedroom again?

I've celebrated family members birthdays, anniversary's, retirements all those things I would have never been able to treat them too without DVC.

I think you'll find a use for those points and end up not selling in 7 years.

I am feeling the itch to buy another one, for sure. I like the idea I could sell it if I wanted to but you are probably right about finding a use for the points.

We took our parents on both sides for a number of years. With that in the 70s was mostly fine. Late 70s early 80s was they did their own thing mostly. If they plan to follow you around at the parks expect to slow down a lot otherwise you will have cranky parents. Rest days are very important….
The biggest hits for hotels were AKL Jambo, a lot to do and nice places to get a drink. SSR and OKW are great also with the boat ride or walk to DS if they prefer for great food, entertainment and shopping. 2 BR are easy to get at all.
Your parents may differ we had 66-90 over 12 or so years from wheel chairs after knee replacements to making sure we ate at 12PM and 6PM to everything in between.
I had to many points for a while but lately taking my brothers and his family. There is always a family member willing to stay in a room at Disney…..

My Dad is as healthy as a horse at 86 and has plenty of energy, my mom is going to want to be at the resort more. I really loved my one stay at Animal Kingdom and think that the resort has something unique for everyone.

You ask about 8-11month availability, If your points are not all at the same resort ( like your 2 contracts now) then you would not be able to combine them until the 7 month mark. Unless you were looking at this one new contract large enough for the 2 bedroom trips. I would look at adding on to the same resorts you have now. At 7 months the large, AKL,SSR,OKW should have 2 bdrms available most times of year.

OK, great point. Animal Kingdom is the experience that I would think they would enjoy the most, I don't own there yet.

I think seven years is a little short for a time horizon, TBH. Add in the huge uncertainty of all sorts of things: Your parents' health may change unexpectedly. Your son's willingness to travel will likely change well before he leaves the nest---the high school years can be tricky if various extra-curricular activities become important. Heck, even your marriage can change a lot in seven years.

If it were me, I would not add on, but would instead make do with what I had and augment by transferring points in as needed.

Can say from experience we bought in. Treated some family on some trips. Then we got bored. Sold the contracts for more than we paid. Then, we missed it after a few years and have bought back in with 3 smaller contracts. Probably should have just rented those points during our boredom phase. FYI

I will say, once you’ve started staying in 1BR+ it is hard to go back. We’ve certainly done studio stays and will again for sure - sometimes it’s about maximizing points and as we usually arrive late in the evening, I often book studios for the first 1-2 nights - but every chance we get we do the 1BRs or above even if it’s just the two of us. We like having the washer/dryer, the extra space, the jacuzzi/soaking tub, and the full kitchen (we often do breakfasts and sometimes dinners in our villas). DH and I have different sleep schedules, so the separate sleeping area means he can stay up late and not keep me up; and I can get up early and not disturb his sleep. Part of our desire to own DVC was to enjoy the better accommodations.

So I’m firmly in the “buy a contract” if it’s within your means, because you’ll find you’ll use the points. You can rent out if you don’t or even resell.

We have more points arguably than we can use in a year and some years we do indeed rent out points, helping to cover the cost of our dues. But we’ve also used our points to not only up-level our own vacations (switching to 2BRs when traveling with our two sons so they also have private space), but for trips with family or with friends, we’ve splurged with staying in Grand Villas. Which I would never have done on cash stays. The CCV Cabins are also our favorite, and boy do they use up points fast, lol!
