Rent Car in St. Thomas then drive to St. John?

We are going on our second Disney cruise in May and would like to explore St. John. Is it better to rent a car in St. Thomas and take the car ferry at Red Hook to St. John, or ride the ferry over to St. John and rent the car there??

We rented a car in St. Maarten last time and had a blast exploring on our own. We highly recommend Friar's Bay to families - wonderful uncrowded beach with gentle gentle water. However it is a European beach and some ppl do remove tops.

We will do that again and are looking forward to St. John as a new experience!

If you're going to rent a car, it makes more sense from a financial and flexibility standpoint to rent at St. Thomas and then take the car ferry over.
