rent a car without insurance?

A person who returns the car with 3/4 of a tank will pay around $15. A person who filled it up would probably pay around 3.25 or around $9.75. The "penalty" for not taking the time to fill up the car is around $5.00

Under almost any scenario, short of running out of gas while waiting to return your car, the pre-paid gas plan will cost you more then the $5.00 extra you'll pay if you return the car at less then empty. Light driving you'll only use 1/4 tank. Otherwise just gas once.

I have no problem gassing up on the way to the airport but even if I did the pre-paid gas plan is still a bad solution.

Yes, Lewis, for you it is a bad solution, for others, it is a convienance that they are willing to pay for. Your numbers work well, but, consider one of those ginormous SUVs, a quarter of a tank of gas for that thing will cost a bit more than your 15.00 dollar figure, just sayin. I was floored when I saw the cost to fill one of them. Definitely makes me feel better about filling up my little 4 cyl. Honda Accord. :)
As I said before, I offer it and if they decline, I say Ok, tell them where to get reasonably priced gas, tell them what stations to avoid, ask if I can help them further and wish them a happy vacation and safe driving.

Years ago I rented a car in TPA with a return in MCO. The clerk told me I needed the gas plan because there "aren't any gas stations in Orlando" I said I feel sorry for the poor people living in Orlando. What do they do when they run out of gas. She said she meant there aren't any gas stations anywhere near MCO. I declined and said I'll take my chances.

I suspect most customers who elect the gas plan aren't doing it for convenience but rather haven't crunched the numbers and don't understand how it works.

No matter how many miles you drive or how many times you fill up during your rental, if you buy the tankful of gas up front then any gas remaining in the tank at return time increases the cost per gallon of that prepaid tankful by the amounts described in the replies up above.

Don't be tricked by thinking that by driving the car in with the Fuel Light on means you are breaking even. Any cars that we had that had fuel lights, the light would turn on when there was about 40-50 miles of driving left. If your car gets 20 mpg, that means you could have two to three gallons left in your tank. With two gallons left in the tank at the prices I was using in my previous posts, you are paying $3.88 a gallon.

This product is about convenience, nothing else. Buying it is never a money saving deal.

When you rely on your personal auto insurance, your deductible does apply. If you have credit card coverage, that coverage may be primary or secondary. If it is primary, it would cover the amount in full. If it is secondary, it would cover whatever your personal auto insurance doesn't. In most cases this would be the deductible.

I am pretty sure the majority of the people who opt for it have brains enough to figure it out. It is pretty straight forward. You purchase the gas up front, return it , hopefully, empty. If you don't you will not get a refund on the gas remaining. It is there in black and white. And, we stamp the contract with the words" Fuel Service Selected. No refunds for unused fuel" . This is in red and in caps.
Years ago Alamo was owned by Vanguard and prior to that someone else and they were horrible. It seemed like even the steering wheel was an option. :)

Not always. Check with your agent.
