Has anyone been able to renew their AP after their expiration date recently?

My friend and I went to Disneyland last night to discover that his AP had expired just last week. We went to the ticket booth and the CM told him that he had to get a new pass and could not renew at the discounted price

I know as recently as 2012, I had been able to renew after the deadline - it just meant that the expiration date would be one year from the original expiration date. And to check that I wasn't going crazy, several forums note that people had received notices from Disney that said you can renew up to 30 days after the expiration date. The USA today travel section also still notes this. I think it's also exacerbated by the fact that they don't print your expiration date on the pass anymore.

I've also read on the Disboards that you could renew your pass up to 30-days after the expiration date at the renewal price (the expiration date would be based on the original expiration date). That being said, the terms and conditions do limit renewals to before the pass expires, so perhaps DLR is cracking down on that.

RENEWALS: The value of any separate ticket media (except for certain promotional tickets) may not be used toward the renewal of an existing Passport. A “renewal” is the purchase of another year of Passholder benefits before the expiration date of a currently existing and valid Passport. All Passport types are available for renewal unless explicitly stated otherwise. Any renewal discounts are valid only until the applicable current Passport’s expiration date.

I had heard that renewal discounts after the expiration date were discontinued with the advent of the "evergreen" passes.

Here is the current official wording on the the Disneyland website under "Annual Pass Terms and Conditions":

RENEWALS: The value of any separate ticket media (except for certain promotional tickets) may not be used toward the renewal of an existing Passport. A “renewal” is the purchase of another year of Passholder benefits before the expiration date of a currently existing and valid Passport. All Passport types are available for renewal unless explicitly stated otherwise. Any renewal discounts are valid only until the applicable current Passport’s expiration date.

They have stopped with the grace period either this past year or the year before with the price increase. You will have to purchase a new pass at the regular price.

That's pretty disappointing, especially since the "Evergreen" Passes don't print the expiration date on them and the CMs at the turnstiles can't tell you what your expiration date is.

Also, in researching this online, this was the first Disneyland search result that came up after googling "renewing annual pass": https://disneyland.disney.go.com/faq/annual-passes/renewal-options/ It does not say within 40 days before expiration, so I take that to mean 40 days before or after expiration.

It says:

"Annual Passes – Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I renew my Annual Passport?

A. You can renew online or in person within 40 days of expiration. To renew in person, please visit a Disneyland Resort Main Entrance Ticket Booth"

The FAQ may be kind of vague in it's wording, but the Terms and Conditions associated with the AP are clear.

I don't think the FAQ is vague actually. It says 40 days within the expiration date - that means before or after.

You could try taking the FAQ answer to the ticket booth and see what the CMs say, but the Terms and Conditions are pretty explicit about the renewal period. And in the end, the Terms and Conditions has the usual disclaimer that everything is subject to change without notice.
All terms, conditions and benefits including, but not limited to, admission privileges, Blockout Dates, prices, Pass type availability, parking locations, and discounts are subject to restrictions, availability, and change or cancellation without notice at any time.

The renewal letter clearly state within 30 days after expiration. I would always suggest bringing your renewal letter with you though, that way they can see that.

Thanks for the tip. :thumbsup2: I'm not sure if he has or received his renewal letter, since he just recently moved. I got my renewal letter so I will have to check mine.

I have read that they will honor the price in the renewal letter even if the price of the AP has increased in the mean time. So hopefully, that same policy will apply to any other changes in the renewal process. I think you'll have a better chance of convincing a CM to extend the renewal discount with the letter, rather than the FAQ page (which appears inconsistent with the letter, if the letter says 30-days).

Oh, this is all so helpful to me as I got my first ever AP in February this year. I am wondering what type of a discount you get if you renew before it expires--this whole process is all new to me. And, am I understanding correctly that I will get a renewal letter sometime before my AP expires?

The discount is based on the level of AP. Since you're in northern CA I assume you either got the deluxe or premium. The renewal discount is currently $40 for deluxe and $60 for premium.

I guess you are supposed to get a renewal letter. I have heard this is hit and miss. I did get mine; it showed up about 2 weeks before my expiration date, after I had already renewed online. I can't remember if I also got an e-mail reminder.

I think it's hit or miss. I got my renewal letter this year, but I don't recall getting one in the past two years before, but I'm not sure what address was on file that they were using either.

Quick question as we are about to purchase our first DL annual passes :goodvibes

When does the pass expire?

Is it 365 days from activation? 364 since your first day available to use it is the day you activate?

We are DVC members and want to make sure we get our second trip in before the things expire ;)

Thanks!

It will expire on the same day the next year as when you first use it. So, if first use is on December 9, 2014, the pass will expire on December 9, 2015 (last day you can use it). "First use" consists of either going through the ticket gates with the voucher (and thus getting the actual AP) or exchanging the voucher for the actual AP at the ticket booths.
