Remove stroller hood before gate checking?

Just got my new Maclaren Volo and LOVE it. Wish I would've tried one of these earlier, as I have 3 children who have been weaned on Graco gear. Anyway....the hood on the Maclaren can easily be removed and folded to the size of a flat toilet seat lid. I'm nervous it will be broken or bent when it is thrown and transported with all the other gate checked strollers. Should I (and am I allowed to) remove it and carry it onto the plane?

I always removed anything that could be removed and used a bungy cord in addition to the strollers locking mechanism to keep it closed when gate checking. Even though its last on / first off the stroller can still get jostled and bumped around so anything you can do will help. I just packed the hood, cup holder tray, toys ect in my checked bags and then re-attached everything to the stroller at the resort.

The hood on my Zooper Twist was designed to pop off too (and often does even when just folding the stroller up, UGH). It never even occurred to me that I should take it off and carry it onto the plane - I just gate-checked the entire stroller. I did make sure that there wasn't anything left in the basket or dangling from the frame (mesh cup holders, etc). Luckily, we didn't have any issues with the handling of our stroller. If you are truly concerned/nervous about leaving the hood attached - just do as the PP suggested, leave room in a carry-on/luggage for it

I would take it off. We once had a stroller hood broken when we gate checked the stroller.

I have a Kidco LS2000 umbrella stroller & I usually take it off and pack it in my checked luggage and then put it back on after we arrive. We usually leave early in the AM and arrive late in the afternoon anyway so the hood is not needed the first day. I have checked it w/the hood on too (when I just forgot to take it off before hand) and not had any problems but that could have been pure luck.
