It sounds like that is what they are doing since the kid in this one lost his parents in a car wreck when he was 4 and lived in the woods alone with Elliot after that.

Plausible, but considering what Disney has done with other live action movies, I'm guessing it's more of a rewrite. They'll keep a few elements but create a whole new story.
Everyone realizes that the Dragon will now be realistic/CGI, right? It's going to be more darker undoubtably too. More like "How to Train Your Dragon" if I had to bet.
I hope they don't get too crazy with Elliot's animation. I know not everyone today is nostalgic as I am but I'd like them to give some of the older movies more love. Especially this one.
