dh and i just bought a house. we are very excited, BUT we are moving from an apartment with wall to wall carpeting to a place that has all hard wood floors.

i'm looking for suggestions on where i can find relatively inexpensive carpets. i don't want to have to spend $$$$ - especially since we are strapped for cash between paint/moving/closing costs.

Target (especially their website), Home Depot, Lowes and I like this website http://www.rugsusa.com/

I purchased a rug from Rugs USA, it is a nice rug, came when they said it would come and free shipping. They have all kinds of prices to choose from.

Beside the ones mentioned you can also try overstock.com

We bought ours at a local flea market. They were brand new in the package and we paid 1/4 of what they would have been at the store.

Aside from the handmade rugs that we have in some rooms, we bought our area rugs from Home Depot and through a local rug wholesaler. For a large rug that would have been $300-400 at Home Depot, we got rugs that were bound on both sides from the wholesaler for about $140.

Check your yellow pages to see if there is a wholesaler that can accommodate you.

You can also, for a temporary fix until you can afford what you want, go to a carpet store and find a remnant that you can buy and have bound. You can get these for a steal and they are often very good quality.

After spending a fortune on my new Pergo I realized I needed area rugs & didn't want to spend another fortune... I got some fairly nice ones from Lowes & Linens n Things.

Okay, don't laugh. But I found a couple nice ones for my kids bedrooms at Big Lot for $29. It beat the cheapest price I found at WalMart ($99).

I saw nice area rugs at Sam's this weekend - not only oriental style but also ones that were modern with geometric patterns. Very inexpensive!!! I also second Overstock.com - you can find some great bargains there! :thumbsup2

There are some really nice ones at Walmart.com and JC Penney.Com

Just in case you wanted to compare to something a tiny bit more expensive, check out www.frontgate.com. We got one from there, its a round one, for our foyer...not too bad in price, was around $400, and its great. Has been holding up for about a year or so now and still looks brand new.

Congratulations on your new home, Caity!

As was suggested above, you can go to a rug store that sells remnants and have them bound. It's kind of hit or miss though. You won't always find the size and/or color you need, when you need them.

My sister bought a couple of beautiful rugs from QVC with the brand name Royal Palace. They're really nice! I bought my Orientals from Home Depot years ago, and comparatively speaking, the ones from QVC seem way better--cheaper price and better quality.

Good luck!

Congratulations on your new home, Caity!

thanks! dh and i are very excited! :goodvibes

thanks to everyone for the suggestions - the remnant idea is a good one. i will have to find a carpet place.

if anyone has any other suggestions, please post. :)

www.rugs-direct.com is where we've furnished our whole house. Free shipping and great customer service.

Bought this set for under $200 for THREE rugs and they're BIG:

I like Lowes for nice area rugs. I went there on Sunday and found one for my living room. It was originally $138.00 and marked down to $69.00. While looking at it, the department manager said that if I bought it, he would mark it down further. It is 5' X 8' and I ended up getting it for $50.00.

www.HomeDecorators.com has nice things. It was recommended to me by my friend who is an interior designer. They have everything from carpets to bathroom vanities to switch plate covers.

Caity,
I have all hardwood floors too. I did order two area rugs (very plain) from Smith and Noble. They weren't cheap but they were nice and plain and they also sell one of the best rug pads out there. I find the rug pads in the stores to be horrendous. I also needed 9 x 12 (and larger) rugs and a lot of stores don't carry that size. You might check them out--they are on line and they have wonderful customer service.

Other than that, in all my searches, I have found that Home Depot and Lowe's have very nice patterned area rugs that seem inexpensive. Sometimes when you get to the REAL cheapy level rugs, the patterns are kind of crappy. I have found the ones here to be kind of nice. Also, Costco and BJs will often have some nice ones but it's hit or miss as to when their shipments come in.

You will LOVE the hardwood floors.

The second one is the one we bought at the flea market. We paid $30 for it. I love it and enjoy it everyday!
