The website says you must have a receipt or gift receipt.

we have neither, but really only need an REI gift card for the amount.

Will REI do this or is it not worth my bother to drive over there?

(I cannot ask the person who gave it to them for the receipt, they tend to get offended by these things but this is a duplicate for our kids and they would really prefer something else.)

Thanks,

Dawn

I've never done a return at REI without a receipt, but I would go in and explain that you do not have the receipt and I'm sure they'll help you out somehow. I love REI's customer service!

Try giving them the name of the person (or address or phone number) who purchased the gift for you and see if they can look up the purchase somehow from their information -- I don't know if they can look items up that way or not, but it's worth a try. Chances are, they'll allow you to return it and get a gift card for the item's value either way. :)

My guess is you won't have a problem getting store credit for it, especially since it's right after the holidays. Why not just call your local store and ask? That way you won't waste time and gas if they say no.

REI is great when it comes to customer service. If you have the phone number of the person who bought the merchandise, they can look up the actual purchase if they are a member. And the person will never know. If not, they will most likely give you a gift card to the store for the current price. Keep in mind that a lot of their store has gone on clearance as of Friday so prices are lower than a few weeks ago. I had to take back a shirt my husband bought me which I already owned and it was seamless. But that same shirt that I bought for $46 a few weeks ago was marked down to $30 yesterday.

Just keep in mind if you return it using the person's number, they'll see it if they check the rei membership site (if they are a member) I'm not not sure how it would work if you get store credit? Just a heads up though because you said the gift giver can her easily offended.
