I may have to make a new visit to the Sears Tower on my next visit to Chicago to check it out. I haven't been up there in years, because I prefer the view from the Hancock Building better. IMO, It gives you a better overview look of the city.
I love/hate the glass floor at the CN Tower. Once your on it, it is the coolest. Getting there is 85% of the battle though. I took several Spaniards and a German there one some and they had a blast--walked right onto it. No hesitation.
I have been in the St. Louis Gateway Arch many times. the tram ride to the top of the Arch is somewhat Cramped. but the view at the top is awesome. the observation room at the top gets packed durring the summer but it seems to handle crowds well because many people. come and go frequently.
I too have been in the arch and the swaying is kind of scary.
I did look out the windows in the Stratosphere and was really scared!!!
I live here in Chicago and have not been up in the Sears Tower (I refuse to call it by it's new name) in years, but I actually might have to take a trip downtown one day soon and check it out.
The info on the news here said the glass is 1 1/2" inches thick, well actually 3individual pieces of glass that are each a 1/2" thick. This will make it easier to change out if the glass gets scuffed.
They also said it holds 5 tons which is a lot of weight. They said eight people could stand in it at one time. There are 4 of them up there to stand on and on a clear day you can see as far as Wisconsin to the north and Indiana to the east.
Anyone up for a challenge, hey we could have a DIS meet up there. Now that would make for a great pic.
I used to love doing things like visiting the Empire State Building and Twin Towers but not any more. Last year when I visited friends in Chicago, we went to the Sears tower. I spent most of the time hugging the inner wall. NO WAY. DD made fun of me when watching UP in 3-D and I had to look away.
For photographers, the Sear tower appears to welcome cameras on the glass balcony.
Cameras are not permitted on the balcony over the Grand Canyon. There was some ridiculous excuse about fearing that dropped camera could damage the floor.
Perhaps the Sears tower is made of a stronger material, or maybe the gift shop is not so greedy.
