I've stumbled across a blog of a girl who goes to my daughter's middle school. In this blog she has threatened/promised to burn the school down.

Is this just teenage venting on her part or is it something that needs to be brought to the school admin's attention?

Probably just venting but you would hate yourself if you didn't say anything and then she did do something. She is putting it on a public blog, she can't expect people to not see it so I would say something.

I'd let the school know about it. It's probably just venting, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Bring it to the school's attention ASAP.

She posted this in a public place/forum and obviously wants someone to pay attention to it. I think the poor girl needs attention and help and the school is the right place to start unless you know her parents very well and are comfortable calling them.

::yes::

what was the context? There is a HUGE difference between venting and planning an action.

Here is a copy of what she said:

im not ready for school to start uuuugggghhh watch me get sum classes with Sean or sumthing that would be sssooooo awkward and just my luck i dont have any friends in any of my classes im gunna burn the school down for that maybe not today or tomarrow or the next day but sumday that school will be ash and i will be the one who caused it!

I just called the school's principal and gave him a link so that he could decide how to handle it.

That sounds pretty threatening to me. Good for you for emailing it.

I think that was probly just harmless venting, but it *sure* doesn't hurt to bring it to the school's attention.

Goodness! That's quite the education she must be getting if she mistakes sum with some.

Good idea to call the Principal - hopefully there will be some resolve to this and some improvement in English classes! Sorry - can't resist - I was the Grade 5-8 spelling bee champ.

Glad you called - better to be safe than sorry.

I don't understand why teens post things like this in a public forum because they're just asking for trouble, even if they're just blowing off steam or trying to act cool.

the kids all use "internetspeak" in their blogs...I wouldn't be concerned about "sum" ...

I'm more concerned about the content.

the principal at my daughter's middle school told us that whenever they see a message like that -- usually they find something scrawled in one of the restrooms -- they have to take it seriously. years ago they always treated such things as venting, and most of the time they're right about it being harmless to others. but in this post Columbine world they can't take the chance.

some schools have been known to overreact to relatively harmless statements, but this statement doesn't seem "harmless" at all.

you did the right thing calling it to the school's attention.

trust me. as a teenager with a blog. actually many. but thats besides the point. she's totally kidding. we crazy teens say stuff like that all the time. like, "im gonna kill so and so", or "thats gay", or random other threatening things. i say things like that all time. no one really means it. well the majority dont. and i can tell the girl isnt threatening for real.

I'm inclined to agree with you. Teens are full of bravado, and that is reflected in their speech, actions and blogs. Unless you have reason to believe, other than this singl blog, that this girl is suffering in some way that make cause her to be a real threat, well, I would have to see the rest of her blog to get a better idea before I took any action. I mean, she said she has friends, so right there, she doesn't sound like a kid at risk. She's probably just nervous about school starting and uncertain about how she will fit in. If she had said she didn't have any friends, then I would be worried. JMO
I think it is up to you how you handle it.

It Chat, rules of english don't apply. In Chat you find the shortest, fastest way to say something.

Now I am a teen, and I have a blog. She doesn't mean that. she is just venting. If she meant it she wouldn't have written in a blog about it, people see blogs, that isn't something that you are gonna broadcast if you really mean it.

Whether she meant it or not is irrelevant. It’s a terroristic threat and should not be ignored. Hopefully there will be some consequences.

There are things that we just don't say and this being one of them.
