Refrigerators and Proof

Just a quick question.
When I made our reservation I informed CM that we required a fridge for medical reasons, for medication. She told me to be prepared to provide a letter and proof of the medical reason.
I thought in the US that they are not allowed to ask for proof?
I have no problem showing them the meds but I just thought they weren't allowed to ask?:confused3

We've never been asked for proof. I don't bring any kind of documentation with us beyond the medication itself. I suppose we could show that if required but as I said, I've never been asked.

Because you are getting something for free that normally you would pay for I THINK(not sure) they can ask, but my guess is they won't. Just showing the meds should be enough in the off chance they do ask.

Yep, this has come up before, and I think the explanation is that you are getting something for free that is available to anyone as a paid benefit.

If it is because of an ADA disability then thay can not ask for "proof", for medical reasons that do not rise to the level of a disability they can make a reasonable request for verification.

Good explanation!
Thanks everyone. I have no problem showing them our meds, I was just curious.

I have heard (but not seen for myself) that medical fridges can be quite small; smaller than the "dorm" fridges lots of ppl expect. If your meds are big or you need a lot of them, make sure you get the right size fridge.

We were at Pop Century in March and requested a "Medical" fridge for my son's insulin. No problem. It was tiny--and they charged us. They did reverse the charge. I was glad I noticed.

I thought there was only one size fridge available?

Actually that is incorrect in this situation. If you are getting an accommodation for free that a non-disabled person would have to pay for, that is a superior accommodation of your disability and the provider can require proof of a disability. If the accommodation is to provide equal access to someone not disabled, then they cannot ask for proof of the disability under the ADA.

No, there are 2 sizes I am aware of and there might be an in-between size.
The first size is a regular dorm size refrigerator.
The other size I know about for sure is much smaller - sort of the size of a very large shoebox.
I have also seen a few reports about an in-between size; bigger than a shoebox and smaller than a regular dorm one.

Also, for anyone staying at a Moderate, Deluxe or Disney Vacation Club resort, there are already refrigerators in all of those rooms at no charge.
The only resorts which charge for refrigerators are the Value resorts.

::yes::
another example of that would be the National Park system has park passes available free of charge to people with disabilities. There is a requirement to provide proof of disability for those passes because people without disabilities have to pay for their park passes.

A similar example would be the paratransport (wheelchair accessible door to door) bus service available in some areas. To be certified for this, my DD needed some forms filled out by her doctors and an explanation about why she could not use the regular bus system. Since non-disabled people don't get this type of bus service, it is a superior accommodation that needs to be qualified for.
