Reflections after first year of DVC ownership

Why do they do that? Seems like it should be pretty easy to show them somewhere, is it something they hope people might forget about them? lol
I have learned that nothing in IT is as easy as we think it is. Pulling on one string always pops up problems somewhere else…. especially when the engine running everything is probably old technology.

Because it probably has not been worth figuring out how to build. The dashboard now is "by year", and if you have more than one year, it would require a completely different UX.

I don't need them on the dashboard. I just don't want to sit on hold trying to call MS>

Yea, i get it... If it ain't broke don't fix it. :)

Still would be nice if there was just a note somewhere or ANYTHING to show they exist.

Coming up on our 2 year anniversary soon. But it's only been 1 year since we actually used any DVC points. Just 3 DVC trips so far (1 VGC and 2 BRV.) I'm not sure if I'm really in the "wish I'd joined sooner" camp though. Basically because before 2 years ago, we were always happy to stay off-site at Disneyland and moderate/value at WDW. As soon as that was no longer the case, we bought DVC. So I guess the timing was just right for us. (Though, obviously, if I'd known back in 2009 that I'd eventually want to stay at the Grand Californian all the time, I would have purchased when it opened. But that really wasn't even a possibility for us at the time anyway.)

Same, same, & same. lol (actually 1st trip was AKV, BWV & BRV, my 2nd WDW was OKW w/ VGC in the middle)

Definitely, can you imagine!! Although, maybe I wouldn't appreciate the location so much if I didn't have to endure all the end of night walks back to Clementine or Hilton after a long day. lol

That's a good point! Our first couple stays were at the Anaheim Plaza (or whatever it's called now.) Then we moved a bit closer to the Desert Inn for several stays. Then our final off-site stay at Park Vue, right across the street....which would have become our new "home" if we hadn't switched over to the Grand. Honestly, Park Vue may even be a slightly closer walk than the Grand Cal but it's just a different vibe having to exit the Disney "bubble."

My 2 year is coming up really soon (offer accepted on the 23rd), & of course like everyone that finally jumps in... wish I would have even known about DVC sooner.!!
I'm sure I saw the DVC kiosk when we took my boys in 2017. But DVC, much less a timeshare, was not on my radar at the time. I had no idea what I was missing. Then we went back, but not until 2021, then again in 2022, and I knew then that I wanted this to be a part of my life long term. So we bought in June of 2023 on our next trip.

I’ll stand by my guarantee. Having multiple UYs is workable, and it has become less of a PITA, but it’s still a PITA that will come back to bite people most of the time.
I have 5 - soon to be 6 UYs - maybe it’s because I have enough points in each UY for a specific resort and time of year reservation - but I’ve never had to transfer points between UYs….
No way would I want to have to use my June UY (my original UY) for a trip in May…
In 15 years of owning - I’ve also never lost even 1 point…

Yea, I had gone to DLR as a kid a handful of times, then in my 30's I lived close, & had a pass so I went a lot, but then moved away & took about 10 years off, had some real life **** happen, & I went back to SoCal for a birthday visit in 2019, went to see one of my favorite bands on a Sat night, then spent the next day at DLR, & it hit me so hard, that it just made for the absolute best weekend in a long time, and now I just can't imagine not going back!!

Not gonna lie... That is pretty impressive!!

Apparently a bunch of us here joined around the same time😌 Our 2yr anni was Feb 1st. My only almost regret (well aside from the common I wish I would’ve bought earlier) was buying BCV blind. But I should’ve known that all would be more than well. We took a super last minute trip last weekend and I stumbled upon 2nts in a 1bdrm like 2 days before the trip lol and of course, we absolutely loved it. BWV was a bit of a disappointment for me so I’m so glad BCV lived up to its hype, and that’s without SAB. I didn’t think we’d want any more 2042 pts buuuut 😅 maybe just another cute small little contract. Just a harmless little guy…we’ll see…👀

Congrats OP, here’s to many many more years of trips and memories 🎊

Why was BWV a disappointment?

Why was BWV a disappointment?
Oo I feel bad coming down on a beloved resort especially because my experience was a one time thing and I recognize it’s not fully fair to judge it on 1 short experience. And I should say, we didn’t hate it. There were definitely some positives, and we will likely stay again if the opportunity is there, but I guess we expected to love it…and just didn’t.

We spent 4 nights there over Labor Day weekend and maybe it was just my expectations were too high? I LOVE the boardwalk area and Crescent Lake in general, it really is so special but for some reason I didn’t really enjoy the hotel as much. The rooms were fine, we got pretty lucky actually and were right on the village green. But they were loud. I could hear all the kids screaming both from the hallway and outside. And though not their fault, people were loudly rolling their suitcases in the courtyard area early in the morning, 2 days in a row. So that wasn’t great. We’ve now stayed at all the park resorts except BLT, BRV and VDH and by far, that room had least soundproofing from our all of our experiences. But I’m sure the room location didn’t help, so there’s that.

I also have never really liked the lobby. Its setup is strange to me and just feels off idk I’m sure I’m the only one with that random nitpick so take that with a big grain of salt lol. The main pool was fine but felt a bit outdated and boring and kind of cramped. The slide was fun though.

The boats weren’t operating the 2x we wanted to go to HS because of the rain. I didn’t even know they stopped them because of rain. The skyliner was even working still which surprised me. Though now that I think about it, maybe there were other reasons why it was down 🤷🏼‍♀️ But what was worse, both times we waited nearly 30 mins for a bus…to HS. (And I know other resorts share buses but man, I hate that 3 resorts share a bus here) I’m sure this wasn’t a common thing, they probably rarely need buses to HS so setting up takes a bit of time but it was just all these small things that left me with a very meh feeling about it all.

But again, I recognize that one mediocre stay doesn’t mean they’ll all be like that it just means that for now, I’m really glad I have 2 other Epcot resorts to call home. Addonitis was kept at bay for once after a trip.

ETA: sorry for derailing your thread a bit @Instagramhusband ! Probably should’ve kept my explanation a bit shorter 🤦🏼‍♀️

Watching people descend into madness is impressive? 🤣

Will offer a different view on timing - I'm glad I bought DVC exactly when I did, and not any sooner.

Exactly one year ago, I decided the time was right to get into resale contracts... and I was ready to buy a lot of them. Lurking/research on these boards was enormously helpful/insightful/revealing. I only cared about lowest price per point and preferably lower than average dues per point. The resale market before last year was not remarkably better/cheaper than it is now, at least not for the contracts I was going to chase, so there was not a financial incentive to buy resale sooner. We were already vacationing in rental houses near WDW so our stays were already pleasant and without a significant lifestyle incentive to buy resale sooner to stay on property. The prices for direct have always been obscene in my view so that was a real deterrent, and new resort access had never been enough bait for me to justify the price premium.

Then something changed - DVC direct offered an absurd fire sale I had never seen before in the 20 years leading up to last year and I was staying in touch on DVC promotions at least once a year (free ice cream!). It was like they opened a time machine and said, step on through to pay direct prices from 2004 around $95 a point if you buy a lot. With a choice of resale or direct at the same price per point (as long as you bought a lot of direct points), that made it obvious to buy direct at exactly that moment. I bought some more direct after that for dumb reasons (should have added on resale Poly instead of direct!), but I don't regret any of it and the stays I've had since I bought DVC have been incredible. As it is with most things real estate, timing is everything! If DVC has another good fire sale, I might take the bait again.

I almost guarantee that at some points over the next 10 years you will hear from your wife that she wishes you just had one use year.

The only caveat is that they made it significantly easier with the ability to transfer banked and borrowed points.
It is possible but Disney is like her second job/main hobby. It is just one contract that doesn't share the same use year so its not even a thought at present.

Impressive! I know for us we go so often and at so many different times of the year, the use year was less important as it turns out 3 are June and one is March.
