They can be reactivated but if the chip fails (put in dishwasher or microwave or just corrupts) then it's not going to work. So it's high risk to just reactivate instead of buying a new mug. You'd need to carry the receipt and keep it safe to prove that you just bought a reactivation on an old mug.
