Red light, green light, traffic light?

Why do I call traffic lights red lights? More often than not, I hit them when they're green. :confused:

I always call them stop lights.

It is probably a regional thing.

Stop lights which now that you said it doesn't make sense. I guess it should be traffic light, signal light.
