I don't think regular soap and water are cutting it anymore for my tweens. I'm noticing break outs and a few black heads already! Isn't a little soon for that?!

What do your tweens use for skin care? What do they like?

TIA!

How about using a homemade scrub? Google "homemade scrub blackheads", you will find many different ones. Many with products you probably already have.

Tweens, heck I'm 48 and still have occasional breakouts. Hormonal???? Tonight I did a scrub of baking soda, salt, and mixed with seeped tea. I made a soft paste with it. My face feels very clean and smooth. Actually, I think I scrubbed too long and too hard. It was tender for about 10 minutes after I rinsed it off :rolleyes1 Feels fine now :)

Stridex pads in the red canister, Neutrogena naturals wash, any brand Salicylic acid gel or cream.

Thanks, wdwmom2 & Gorechick. Great suggestions.

I'd love to help them nip it in the bud.

Sea breeze....it's amazing the dirt that is left behind after we think we have done good job washing face.

Keepin hair off the face helps too

Dollar Tree has the cotton rounds for a dollar they at least twice that every where else an I can not tell any difference in them. They also have small facial scrubbers as well an few thing like that.

Remember nothing is going to work unless they use it.

My 14yo dd uses Burt' s bees products. The acne wash has really helped her mild acne stay under control. Also make sure your dd is washing her hair often enough. I find if dd skips a day she gets new breakouts.

Our dermatologist recommended Cerave and Cetaphil for our dss acne and his brother is using it too for minor breakouts.

I used sea breeze! Forgot all about it. I used noxema too. Tried to get the kids to use it. They weren't impressed. They might like sea breeze though. It's quick at least. That seems to be an issue. Hoping if I find something they like, they will use it consistently.

I like the cotton rounds at the dollar tree too. Good buy. I'll have to look at the other stuff too.

I use some Burt's Bees products. Didn't think they might like it. Thanks!

Apricot scrub - St. Ives

Works great!

I like St. Ives. I've used moisturizers from them. I'll get the apricot scrub. If they don't like it, I will!

Thanks!

Ours recommends those too. I also make a scrub for my DS out of oatmeal. Plain oatmeal ground into a fine powder, make a paste with water and it makes an excellent natural scrub.

When breakouts are more severe, Panoxyl foaming face wash stops them in their tracks. He uses it for a couple of days and then switches back to the everyday stuff.

Panoxyl foaming face wash - if you can find it. It has been on worldwide backorder for a while now. On and off for a year. It has just now been back in stock regularly for the past several weeks in my area. Every time I find it, I buy several tubes.

It is drying so I usually just tell people to start using it in the shower once a day in the beginning. Use it carefully as it can bleach towels if you are not careful. Rinse it off really well. Don't use it around the eye area. In the beginning, since it is still recommended to wash twice a day, use something very gentle like CeraVe or Cetaphil for your other wash. Make sure you use a good moisturizer that doesn't clog pores twice a day. The CeraVe moisturizer is really good. If this works to clear your skin, continue with this regimen. Less is always better. Using something like a Clarisonic will increase the benefits. But since people can get so irritated with the Panoxyl - if you add the Clarisonic, start using the Clarisonic with the CeraVe. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

Go from there. Panoxyl (benzoyl peroxide washes) are a good starting place for a lot of people. You can increase those washes to up to twice a day. You can use the Clarisonic twice a day. But just remember to use a good quality moisturizer.

With Cetaphil, I think you want the "gentle" version. I accidentally bought myself the regular and personally, it felt like washing with dish detergent. The gentle is nice though. DD15 and 12 use Cerave also.

My advice would be to stay away from harsh products that contain alcohol, menthol and strong detergents. I totally understand the temptation to use products with these ingredients as alcohol does kill acne-causing bacteria on the surface of the skin. However, products with alcohol can actually end up drying and irritating the skin, increase inflammation and stimulate oil production.

Pick a gentle, water-soluble cleanser (such as CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser) and follow up with an exfoliant such as BHA/salicylic acid (such as Clean and Clear Advantage Oil Absorbing Treatment). Then finish with an anti-bacterial such as benzoyl peroxide that kills bacteria and reduces inflammation (such as Clean and Clear Persa Gel).

We love Arbonne products, but they are very expensive. They work so well, especially on my DD22. She has oily skin, acne, and plays sports. The Arbonne acne products work so well on her skin.

My friend at work makes her own homemade skin products, and they are great too - but I'm allergic to one of her ingredients, and we can't figure out which one it is. :(

Thank you all for the suggestions.

The main thing is to find a product they like & encourage them to use it consistently. They are on gym mats a lot and those things are nasty.

Thanks again!

The key to treating acne is actually prevention. Any product containing benzoyl peroxide will help. It doesn't do anything to resolve an already formed lesion, but it works as a preventative.

Good luck, acne can really affect a child's self perception. I see so many kids with this problem, but they just don't understand that the answer is prevention....not treatment. once the lesion is there it just has to run its course.

Benzoyl peroxide can be very drying, so make sure to follow up with a moisturizer (no fragrance or coloring added).

My 14 year old uses Purity by Philosophy and a prescription cream called Epiduo-her ped wrote her the Rx, we didn't go to a dermatologist. Her skin wasn't really bad, just some breakouts that other face washes weren't doing anything for(we tried Cetaphil, ProActive, Noxema, Neutrogena, Clearsil..Purity was the best results, but she ended up needing something stronger, hence the Epiduo) Her skin is soft and smooth and beautiful.

If you get it, make sure you get a coupon. Without it, it's like $300 for a tube. Coupons available online are $25 and $15 refills. They last months.

I will say that she is religious about washing her face, taking off her makeup every day.

Prevention is the key. I was shocked it started so young, but luckily it's been just some little things here and there. Got to get on top of it early.

:faint: $300.

I hadn't heard of Purity. I'll keep it in mind.

If things get worse, I'd pay the $300. Skin care is so important.

Thanks to everyone!

I'd really go to a dermatologist before you waste a lot of money. Most wil tell you to use something mild to cleanse your face - like cetaphil or cerave.
There are many types of acne and your dermatologist can determine which kind it is and give you recommendations on products to treat it. My son had cystic acne and had to be on acutane and my daughters acne was hormone related. Totally different types and to totally different treatments!
I do believe you'll spend less money out of pocket going to a dermatologist because hell be able to recommend OTC medications or RX products that are usually covered by insurance.
