Recommendations for Kennedy Space Center?

I'm really excited as for the first day for our Florida trap me and my dad will be visiting the Kennedy Space Center, but I'm a bit overwhelmed. I know only the Kennedy Space Bus Tour is available (with the other two not), but how many hours do you recommend carving out for the day in total if you've been? Should we get there early? What about getting tickets in advance? Is the food good there or too over priced?

I would plan on a whole day to see everything. Any little kids? The newish Planet Play feature gets busy quickly. Would recommend doing that first if you have kids. Last time we went bus reservations were only available once you were on-site and they went quickly too. Your best bet is to get there about 15 min before opening to get through security. I would buy tickets and parking in advance too. The bus tour over to the Saturn V building is amazing, especially for older folks like your dad.
As for the food, two thumbs down. We always bring a picnic lunch and then hit a local seafood place for an early dinner. KSC food is overpriced/poor quality and the lines to order are always super long!

It has to be a soft sided cooler, and no glass bottles. But otherwise you absolutely can.

If you’re a AAA member you can purchase the tickets through them. We’re going in June - adult tickets (12 & up) were 42.50, and kids tickets were 35.00.

I would recommend allotting a full day for KSC, especially if it's your first time.. As for buying tickets in advance, I would say yes, if possible, buy your tickets in advance and be sure to purchase them from the official KSC website to be safe. Definitely do the bus tour but also save time to visit the various exhibit buildings, the shuttle experience/exhibit, and the IMAX films.. The food options are your average theme park quick service food options, there is also a special "chat with an astronaut" experience. with light food samples that you can book as an add-on. Note that I would not recommend lugging around a cooler, the food options are not that bad.. Hope this helps, enjoy!

We went last month and had no trouble bringing in a small sift sided cooler. There are lots of outdoor tables.

We are planning on just doing the exhibits. We have 4 small kids so I think the bus tour might be too much for them. Would you agree or are we really missing out if we don’t do the tour? Thanks.
