Recommend Good Sunless Tanning Lotion?

Does it...

streak in salt water or just chlorinated water?

have a lingering smell like the bottled tanners?

come off on your clothes?

cause skin irritation?

My DD tried a spray tan ( not Mystic) and I didn't notice any difference. She said they selected a 'tanning level' for her -number 4 - because it was her first time. I was not with her at the time, so I was wondering do you select how tan you'd like to be?

As I stated in a response last year. I have melanoma which is the most dealdy and fastest growing cancer in the US among women of my age even over breast or lung cancers and have to be careful with the sun.

I have used Banana Boat sunless tanning for the last couple of years and it is cheap and great.......it has been fine for the 3 cruises I went on last year. I did take it along on both of the 7 day cruises and reapplied it............it is a great value but it is a good idea to apply at night and wear old PJ's bc it will leave a stain on clothes.

I use the medium to dark and it looks like a real tan. I considered going to one of the spray on places but then it is just too easy to do it myself at home :sunny:

I've used a TON of products to look tan because I have a history of skin cancer in my family and I HATE to bake in the sun! I've done the "rae" orange tan more times than I care to admit, had the orange palms, streaks, orange nail beds, darker ankles and for a really long time I swore off self tanning lotions. I started to do the Mist On Tan stuff and it was nice and convenient and after 2-3 times in the mist in a week I looked really nice and brown! My sister in law talked me into trying something else called St. Tropez Auto Bronzant Lotion. It is kind of pricey at 22.60 for a 4oz bottle but the cool thing about it is that if it isnt dark enough for your skin tone you can custom blend it with bronzer to make it your perfect tan. It's aloe vera based and dry's quickly without the orange glow to it. They also sell a mousse, a Mist Spray, body polisher, moisturizer, spf protection, powder bronzer, a travel set and the best thing they have come up with is a self tan remover for when you get it somewhere where you shouldnt have put it like your palms or too far down onto your nailbeds. Also if you use any kind of self tanner and you shave after you put it on it will cause some streaking on your legs unless you reapply the bronzer.

If you want to see the St. Tropez line go to:

I've used Neutrogena and Kiss my Face, but I don't like the smell after a few hours. I've read here that Clinique doesn't leave the smell. Any others?

As far as sunscreen goes, we swear by Bull Frog. A friend of ours, who is a doctor, introduced us to it in Florida a few years ago. I had been using Banana Boat for babies, but my baby was still getting pink in no time at all. We now use Bull Frog faithfully, and neither of my children have ever been burned. I love the spray for the kids.

Au Courant does not have the tell-tale smell. It's expensive though. It does have an instant bronzer as well as sunless tanner all rolled up into a mousse, so you will have color right away. I use it on my legs only.

For the rest of my body, I use Murad Sunless Tanner. I love that one -- also expensive, but doesn't streak like some of the cheap ones. I am a big fan of Clarins too.

When I tried Nuetrogena, I thought it looked too orange and streaky. Probably because I am pale.

I will have to try Clinique since I use all their other products.

Great thread!

Beware of the Mystic Tan .. it is a different chemical than the regular bottled stuff which they spray on. I had a severe allergic reaction and now I have extreme sensitivity to certain soaps, lotions, detergents, and shampoo. I have an eczema type reaction on my neck and face . Even still and I did it almost a year ago. I also just read an article saying that the chemical they use is harmful if inhaled .... and if you have ever tried it you would know that you have no choice but to inhale it ... its like being in the paint spray booth at Midas without a mask!!!!!

On the other hand I love sunless lotion.... Ban De Soliel is my favorite

As being the original poster of this thread, it's nice to see the topic is still floating around...

Anyway, since posting last year, I have had a chance to try a few sunless tanners. Avon, Neutrogena and Clairins are good. I like Clairins the best, no bad smell and you don't have to wait for it to dry before getting dressed. It looked the most natural. I thought Neutrogena DID have an after scent. I will buy Clairins again....Macy's sells it.
