recommend a rice steamer?

DH would like a rice steamer and I know nothing about them. Anyone have a recommendation?

I have a small inexpensive Hamilton Beach rice steamer. It's perfect for making rice for 4. Put in the water, rice and press the button. Always comes out perfect. I love it.
 
Kohl's has a hamilton beach on sale today and tomorrow for 29.99 does that sound like a good price? It says it's a 20 cup capacity- that sounds like a lot!!

I'll have to look for a smaller one :)

Depends if you want to feed the neighbourhood! I just went to look at mine again. It's actually Salton and has a 4 cup capacity so it's much smaller. I didn't want a huge one as I knew I would never need to make that much rice. I've had it 7 years and still find it the perfect size for our family of 3. I think I have seen the same one at Walmart for around $25.00
 

A lot of people consider Zojirushi to be the best rice steamer brand overall. I have a lower-end Zojirushi (no digital bells and whistles, just cook/keep warm settings and a steamer basket). I've been extremely happy with it. I've had it for a couple of years and have used it several times a week with no problems, and it still looks like new. I love that it's incredibly easy--just dump in the rice, dump in the water, put on the lid, and flip the switch.
It's pretty foolproof. The instructions say that for the best texture results you should rinse the rice thoroughly before you cook it (as the Japanese do) but I rarely do that.

Mine is the larger version and was about $55 I believe. I had been thinking I would upgrade to a fancier Zojirushi, but I'm so happy with the simplicity of this one that I think I'll just keep it until it eventually dies.

Big thumbs-up for Zojirushi.

BTW, with any rice steamer you may have to play around a little with the water/rice ratio to get the rice just the way you like it.
 
My sister used to work for Aroma and uses their big rice cooker almost daily.
 
We have one of the fancier Zojirushi rice cooker, and have had it for 4 years! It is probably the best rice cooker that we have had and we use it everyday. Another thumbs up for Zojirushi!
 
I have one that I love that my ex-SIL brought me directly from Japan. My sister bought a Zojirushi to replace the one ex-SIL brought for her from Japan and says she loves it "almost" as much as the Japanese import.
 
We have a Zojirushi. I think it was around $70 and we got it about 8 years ago. We use it at least weekly, sometimes more than once a week. It works perfectly and it is certainly the brand I would recommend.

Anyone heard of or have a Zojirushi?

My mom has a Zojirushi as do I. Mom has had her 10 cup cooker for about 25 years. it still works perfectly. I have had my 5 cup one for 10 years and mine stil works perfectly as well. it is more expensive then some of the other brands like hamiton beach (which was the brand of the first one i had) but it never cooked the rice right.

the Zojirushi was more expensive (about $75) but since i have already had it for 10 years the $7.50 per year investment is totally worth it. I plan to have this one for years to come.

We eat ALOT of rice at our house. I just steam it on the stove, doesn't take much effort. I'm just wondering what I am missing? To me a rice steamer makes as much sense as a quesadilla maker- just one more thing to clutter the counter with...but if I'm missing something I'd be really interested to know...TIA
 
that's how we do it too....the only reason I can see getting a steamer is so that you don't have to watch the stove? Cause when I make rice, I have to lower the flame and keep a timer so a steamer would make that part easier :confused3
 
Some steamers keep the rice warm. And some people have trouble boiling rice like my Dh. He peeks and stirs. You have to leave the lid on till it is cooked.
 
And it steams more than rice- so you can make a flavorful healthy meal of steamed fish and rice very easily! I'm leaning toward the yojirushi myself (my sister isn't at Aroma anymore!)
 
Well, with the rice cooker you are assured of perfect rice every time. I can do brown rice as well with no effort.

Also, you set it up and walk away......something you can't do on the stove top.

For me, it is worth it. I don't keep it on the counter, I keep it in a cupboard where I pull it out. It is very little effort. I keep it with the pans and it is just as easy as pulling out a pan for me.

We also eat a lot of rice. i make fresh rice twice a day 5 days a week. I don't like to eat old rice. But the rice we eat is teh asian jasmine rice. not the minute rice or store brand you get in the grocery store and i find that the asian rice doesn't cook jsut right on the stove top.

also, my rice cooker keeps the rice warm so it seems fresh later. plus i like putting it in and walking away. since i make it so often i am not always in the ktichen to watch it cook on the stovetop.
