Recieved our census today

The purpose is to figure out how many people live in each area (and that's used for many purposes, like doling out funds).

A small percentage of people get the long form, which has more detailed questions.

I got the long form last time. And I am beyond thrilled to have gotten the short form this time. Last time it was questions about my job and all kinds of stuff. I think it was like 6 pages long. Mine will go back in the mail tomorrow.
Space for 8 ppl. Only need 2.

As for the point it is a constitutional requirement to take a census every 10 yrs. It determines how you are represented in the House.

Don't mean to hijack but I have a question. I keep hearing that the census forms would arrive today but we got ours and mailed it back 2 weeks ago. Someone delivered it. Does that sound right?

UM no it doesn't. Everything I've seen/read/heard about the census is that everybody gets them by regular mail first, and nothing was actually mailed out till last week according to our paper. Census workers showing up at the house is the next step.

Ours was hand-delivered a couple weeks ago as well. From what I've heard, it was because our area has a poor response rate.

Only 30% are mailed nationwide, and it's not "even" (aka not 30% of people in Washington DC get theirs mailed). I live in MI's UP, and "most" are being hand delivered up here. So don't worry if yours comes by mail or in person!

Well then the news media around here is wrong. Why am I not surprised:rotfl:

We got ours and filled it out right away. However, we aren't going to mail it until April 1st. We got the short form and had space for 8 people.

We got ours on Monday. I filled it out and sent it back already. Ours had detailed space for 8 people and then space for just the names of 8 more people. It said they would call for those people if needed.

I was actually hoping for the long survey. I kind of like filling things like that out.

We got ours too. I was going to fill it out right away but DH has decided he wants to do it. :confused3

That means it'll be a week or 2 before he does it. Sigh.

My DH said the same thing. we got it in the mail yesterday and he texted me this morning saying he would take care of it. He's very against this thing saying that why should anyone need to know who is in our house or what race we are. I kind of agree, but seeing as they are only asking name, age, and race I guess I don't have too much of a problem with it. If they were asking more personal questions I might have more of an issue.

they are asking more personal questions........the name and relationship of everyone in your house, your birthdate, the birthdate of your kids, if you own your house or rent..........
anyway, I am also against it, but I explained my reasons in the other thread, it has more to do with more private info being out there when it isn't needed.

So if we don't answer race but answer most of everthing else does it still count? I don't see the point in answering race. To me that is not important

Although I know people think it isn't important, and I tend to be a "small govt" person, I think the census is important. Not only is it the basis for representation and federal allocations of funding, but it serves as the "denominator" for a lot of research statistics that both everyday decisions and life & death decisions are based on. Having been involved in research and data analysis in the past, I know census data is "it".

Besides, our future generations can do geneological research on us with this info! :lmao:

Race shouldn't be important. We are all human. That is all it should be.

Ours also had space for 12 people. It took me maybe 2 minutes to fill it out, and I did it slowly and wrote neatly. I put it in the mail today. :thumbsup2

I was LOL that a PP mentioned the Duggers. That's the first thing DD13 said when she saw the form! :rotfl: "What will the Duggers do?" Maybe they (and others with more than 10 kids, or more than 12 people in the home) can add an attachment? LOL

LOL, I thought of the Duggar's as well. They will need 2 forms. :dance3:

I guess I'm confused on why he didn't want to let you do it. Will his answers be different than yours?

We have two homes right now. One is vacant and for sale, the other we occupy. I know we can't fill out both but the form says it's a crime to NOT complete it. I'll look it over in a couple of days to see if there is an out or spot to say this home is vacant.

It's a census and they are counting everything: gender, education, race...
fill it out or they'll send someone to your house.

In terms of equal rights, etc., you are correct, race shouldn't be important. But Pooh's Pixie is right, even the question about race is important in terms of research.

One example where it can be helpful: How many times have we seen a news story about a certain geographical area that faces certain challenges? It is helpful to already know the makeup of the location when starting any research about why this area faces these challenges and what could be done about it, as race can definitely be a factor that must be considered.

Don't worry about the crime thing. If you don't complete it they'll just send a worker to the empty house and if the census worker isn't blind they should be able to tell the house is vacant. Its not like you'll get arrested for not filling out the form. FYI on my form there was no place to say the home is vacant. Just who lives here, ages, and do we own the house stuff.

I read only 30% get in via mail-lots are hand delivered

Ok! So now I realized after reading another post that I filled it out wrong! DH is deployed but i marked him as living with us but living somewhere else sometimes. Will they send a worker out to my house? I was just not thinking straight seeing as he just deployed last week my mind is not with me!
